Democrat T.J. Cox claimed victory Wednesday over Republican U.S. Rep. David Valadao after an updated vote count increased his lead in a California farm-belt district.
Cox, who trailed in the vote tally until Monday, increased his lead to 529 votes out of about 113,000 cast, after updated numbers were released by Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties. The district also cuts through Kern County, which is expected to update its vote count by Monday.
While votes still are being counted, the tallies have favored Cox in post-Election Day updates, prompting him to declare the race over.
I am elated to announce that we have won the election for Californias 21st Congressional District, he said in a statement.
He thanked his wife and family and a campaign staff that never gave up even when the outlook may have seemed dim.
Valadao did not immediately respond to Coxs announcement.
If Coxs lead holds, Democrats will have picked up seven GOP-held seats in California and will begin the new session with a 46-7 advantage in the states congressional delegation.
Valadao easily carried the district in 2016, even though Democrats have a 16-point edge in voter registration. The dairy farmer and former state legislator had maintained his popularity by focusing on water issues critical to agriculture and had backed proposals to settle the legal status of people brought to the country illegally as children, a tip to the districts heavy Hispanic population.
But he was vulnerable in an election year where he continued to support President Donald Trump while Californians exhibited intensifying opposition to the White House. That dynamic played out in Orange County, where the last four Republican seats in what was once a GOP stronghold went to the Democrats.
Democrats also picked up the last Republican-held House seat anchored in Los Angeles County, when Democrat Katie Hill ousted Republican Rep. Steve Knight, and the Central Valley seat held by Republican Rep. Jeff Denham, who was defeated by Democrat Josh Harder.
Cox, an engineer who founded two nut-processing businesses, lashed Valadao in ads as a foot soldier for the Trump agenda who enjoyed government health benefits while voting to upend the Affordable Care Act.
While the election delivered mixed results around the U.S., it affirmed Californias reputation as a Democratic fortress.
Democrats held every statewide office again. The party holds a supermajority in both chambers of the state Legislature, and a 3.7-million advantage in voter registration. There wasnt even a Republican on the ballot for U.S. Senate for the second consecutive election
Provisional ballots, mail in ballots.
We need to up our game by 2020 as the fraud will be rampant.
Almost a month of after the election, they do this???
In this modern digital day and age, It is totally NO EXCUSE for this....unless it’s to cheat. Libs destroy everything they touch, EVERYTHING, including confidence in the electoral process.
Funny how these elections “keep going” for almost a month after Election Day.
And I don’t mean “funny, ha ha.”
Maybe it would be a good idea to just give California to Mexico and be done with it.
Bottom line we LOST the house. Romney’s niece who has been running the RNC should be dumped immediately. The senate was won by Trump personally, with little help from the RNC. Yes there was voter fraud on the part of the RATS, but the GOP did nothing to combat it. Time to get some tough folks to run the GOP, for the upcoming presidential race. May I suggest David Bossie and Corey Lewandowski, two loyal Trumpers who will leave no stone unturned.
This is BS. Theres absolutely no way THIS many races should have been that razor thin and then won with countless rediscovered votes weeks after the election.
2018 elections were a sham.
“Wins” by 1/2% ?
Valadao should be pounding the table for a recount supervised by FEC and FBI.
We're going to get GOOD judges appointed.
Over half of those seats were never-Trump Rhinos..
I bet about least 20 of these seats were stolen
“We’re going to get Good judges appointed”. Not until that s.o.b Flake is gone.
1.2 million illegal aliens registered to vote in California alone.
Let this be a lesson for 2020: we need to swamp the communists or we lose. If Trump is inside the margin of fraud in any decisive states, the WH is gone.
Exactly, but the worse part is our side just rolls over and lets them do this without pushback. It shows you the elected GOP and the leadership are in bed with the RATS in the Swamp!
After all this success they will do 10 times more election fraud in 2020.
The insiders are closing ranks to fight outsider Trump. The NeverTrump GOPe has punted to the Democrats in the hope they can more effectively deal with him.
Amazing how the Dems been able to sweep the slow-count, slim-margin districts. Has a Republican won any of them?
Of course, the GOP rolls over again...
I know a lot of Repukes have sold their soul their soul to the Deep State, but Im wondering how many are just truly stealth Democrats who have infiltrated the party, got elected to office and took over key leadership positions in the party. I look at some of the boneheaded moves the GOP has made over the years, and more than a few times Ive wondered if instead of ineptitude were seeing internal sabotage being perpetrated as well!
“...The insiders are closing ranks to fight outsider Trump. The NeverTrump GOPe has punted to the Democrats in the hope they can more effectively deal with him....”
Exactly.
GOPe = RAT = UniParty = Deep State = Communists
They all may wear different hats, but they are ALL the same and for the same agenda. The two-party system is only theatre for the keep the “unwashed masses” from revolting. The reality is...there is only one party in DC and it’s the communist UniParty. We are nothing but expendable cattle to be milked by them every April 15th.
