When someone says squirrels you'd think of those small size rodent-like creatures with their bushy tails. Jumping and running across from trees to trees, squirrels make for cute creatures hunting for their nuts more often. But residents in North Carolina can spot some oddity in and around Robeson County. These guys are real. My brother has them in his yard all the time. He is in VA. We also used to see them in Iowa when I was growing up.

But whoever got the picture could easily have taken a picture of the same scene with something in it for scale.

Have you ever tried to sneak up on a squirrel and put a dollar next to them? It's harder than it sounds.

Practically speaking, a yardstick could be placed there and imaged later on after the squirrel was gone. Then comparing the imaged yardstick with the imaged squirrel would give the true proportions, eh?

If those are typical longleaf pine needles [about a ft on average] the squirrel is a foot tall excluding tail.... pretty normal for a fox squirrel.

Problem is, longleaf pine needles can be anywhere from 8 or 9 inches on up to 18... so they aren’t get for scale.

A quick story; I grew up in central Arkansas where the trees are pretty tall. I was out squirrel hunting one day, happened to look up in a tree and way up near the top was a big squirrel nest. Looking closely, I saw a piece of fur kinda overhanging the edge of the nest. Thinking it was a squirrel I shot at it with my trusty 22. All of a sudden the nest sort of exploded and a big ole raccoon came tumbling down through the branches , hit the ground and ran off. Scared the heck out of me for sure and probably the raccoon as well! Thought for a moment I had bagged the worlds largest squirrel 🐿! Anyway, was pretty exciting for a ten year old boy 😳...

That’s a 16-18” caliper (diameter) tree to his right. After 25yrs in the nursery business, my sense of distance, width, height etc is uncanny. He’s a big critter.

Fox Squirrels look just like the gray ones except for their size and color.

But the Fox Squirrels are far more gregarious than Grey Squirrels. They’ll climb right up the back of your leg and sit on your shoulder and beg.
