Sen. Rand Paul holding up US aid to Israel

Republican Sen. Rand Paul blocking codification of Obama-era military deal with Israel.

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky is blocking U.S. military aid to Israel.

Paul, who has previously called to cut defense assistance to Israel, recently put a hold on the U.S.-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act of 2018, which codifies into law the $38 billion defense aid package for Israel over 10 years that was negotiated in the final days of the Obama administration.

A hold is a parliamentary procedure that allows senators to prevent a motion from reaching a floor vote.

The Senate passed the act in early August; the House of Representatives followed suit the following month. Now the Senate must pass a final version in line with the bill passed by the House.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, has bought advertisements on Facebook identifying Paul as the main force blocking the act, the Washington Free Beacon reported, citing what it called sources close to the effort.

Meanwhile, Christians United for Israel, or CUFI, sent out an Action Alert email blast on Monday to its supporters calling on them to flood Paul’s office with calls and letters encouraging him to support the legislation. CUFI also invested heavily in ads in Kentucky to target the senator’s constituents directly on the issue, the Free Beacon reported.

This is a really ill-advised place in history to cut back on military aid to Israel. I can understand Paul’s devotion to his convictions, but this simply is not the time for it.

Rand Paul does some really stupid shit sometimes.

Then he somehow manages to pull his head out of his ass and do the right thing.

We need God’s blessings far more than we need libertarians who do not grasp that truth reigns. The Bible says those who bless Israel are blessed.

Israel we can afford, and must. The wall, too. It’s the billions and billions we waste on countless other things, given to enemy governments, and that are stolen that need to be addressed.

Finally, something he and his leftist nextdoor neighbor can agree on. Okay, so, it's not that rare. Thanks SJackson.

Israel is a socialist country funding their welfare state off our military just like Europe. Cut all funding and let them pay for it.

Republican Establishment:

“foreign aid? No problem! cost is no object!”

“Social Security? Cut it! Do you think we’re made of money?”

If you take me to be an atheist, why quote Scripture to me?

In any event I am aware of multiple interpretations of the meaning of what you quoted. No foreign policy decisions should be made in reference to a particular one of them. My pocket is picked quite enough to fund the rampant government of my own country, and I have not the slightest interest in funding someone else’s government on top of that.

“Except they never have helped us in our wars over there.”

Well, except doing things like blowing up Iraq’s nuclear weapons program, sabotaging Iran’s nuclear weapons program (remember Stuxnet and the audacious theft of records?), and blowing up Syria/North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, you mean.

It’s a one-two punch.

“End ALL foreign aid.”

I view it as more like weapons research.

They are our forward observers and forward-placed troops.

Shouldn’t be giving any money to any country.

This right here. We are in debt up to our eyeballs and have a terrible spending problem. Until we shore up, we can't provide aide.

Fair points. Ultimately the money will be spent buying stuff from US military contractors which helps keep our own defense industry going. Without foreign sales many would have to close down. So that helps our security too.

The Liberty attack was an outrage, but all the people involved in the decision are now long dead. I can’t imagine anyone in the current government making the same choice.

Indeed, we should never forge the crimes of hte NSA and the fact that they continue to lie to protect themselves. What kind of monsters send an escorted spy ship into a war zone, after the American president promises to keep ships out of the area? NSA chiefs have American blood on their hands and rely on useful idiots to protect them.
