ANALYSIS: Why Trump shelved his peace plan for Israel

President Donald Trump has reportedly shelved his ‘deal of the century’ peace plan, at least for now, Palestinian Authority media outlets reported on Thursday.

The decision was taken after Ron Dermer, the Israeli ambassador to the United States, reportedly recommended that the White House postpone the publication of the initiative because of the political and security crisis in Israel, according to the Palestinian Authority paper Al-Quds.

An unnamed Israeli diplomatic source said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu "prefers no ‎announcement of the plan whatsoever, especially now, amid the ‎recent developments in the region and the political ‎crisis in Israel."

The Trump Administration has been working on the plan for nearly two years and has postponed its publication repeatedly mainly because of fierce Palestinian opposition to the proposal which reportedly envisions a demilitarized Palestinian state.

Ayelet Shaked, the Israeli Minister of Justice, reacted to the news by saying Trump was ‘wasting his time’ by pushing for a peace agreement in Israel at this point in time.

"I think, personally, it's a waste of time. I want peace like anyone else, but I don't believe it's possible to reach an agreement," Shaked told participants in a political conference in Jerusalem.

.....

Palestinian Authority Imams even prevented the burial of an Arab resident of eastern Jerusalem who was suspected of selling real estate in Jerusalem to Jews.

The man, who was killed in a car crash, was subsequently buried in a Jewish cemetery after Aryeh Stern, the chief rabbi of Jerusalem ruled an exception would be made because he said the Arab was a righteous gentile.

This all took place before the Shin Beth, Israel’s internal security service, announced that Hamas is once again trying to establish itself in Judea and Samaria in order to carry out new severe terror attacks in Israel.

Losing proposition. Every POTUS has to have one, but nobody except Lurch and Odumbo, and maybe Jimmuh, actually believed theirs would work.

You can’t have peace with people who from birth, are told that Jews are the devil and must be destroyed

Timing is everything.

Perhaps better in tandem with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, being a related important announcement:

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Spoken from the Sea of Tranquility.

Sometimes, peace is not the best solution. What they need is to carve out a piece of Jordan across the river and move all the muzzies there. I know forced relocations usually have bad results, but not this time. When you have a rabid dog it’s just best to put some distance as well as physical barriers between you and it.

I am sure the vast majority of Freepers will say “NO WAY”, but the only way this will work is if we (USA, EU, GCC and Asian countries) all agree to put that $30 billion that Clinton promised them in 1999 back on the table.

That’s not the only thing required to make it work. The Palestinians have to get their own house in order. They have to organize behind and support 1 government, and that government has to have monopoly use of force and be willing and able to stop and punish any rogue elements that try to launch cross-border attacks.

To resettle the people living in refugee camps across the region, they will need 100,000s of new housing developments and infrastructure. Some of them will have to agree to resettle in Jordan and/or the Sinai, with some of the money going to those countries.

I don’t know all the details, but a well thought out plan will have to be made public and sold worldwide. It will require support from all corners. Of course it has to be demilitarized. What on earth are they going to need tanks, missiles, rockets for? They need only small arms for internal security reasons. Neither Israel nor Jordan will be a threat to them - in fact those are the only two countries that are vital to their survival, especially Israel. Poor countries can’t trade their way to prosperity with other poor countries. A Palestinian state needs to be best friends with Israel - it’s obvious. And given all the needs (infrastructure, health care, education, training, housing etc) they shouldn’t be spending money on tanks and planes and rockets.

This concept can be sold, but it has to be sold. And if the world agrees with the logic, then the Palestinians will be pressured to accept it. It may even have the effect of galvanizing the population into supporting 1 ruling authority instead of 2 or 3 or 4 like they are now.

you’re on a good track, imho, but all of these savages need to be repatriated, moved, relocated much further away and in isolation from (not bordering on) any other peoples or countries.

You can’t possibly have peace with people whose entire “brand” is hating Jews, and acting upon that hatred with murder, injury, penalizing people who do perfectly normal honest business with Jews, etc. They are clearly uneducated, irrational, and brainwashed animals. Glad Trump dropped the perennial presidential project of “Peace in the Middle East”. Israel doesn’t need its hands tied in yet another fruitless unilaterally-observed “peace”.

It’s craziness. They have squandered 2 generations of lives just since the signing of Oslo. A Palestinian state needs to be best friends with Israel, not enemies! That is their only realistic path to economic prosperity. They can have seaports and an airport and trains and even a dedicated passage connecting Gaza to the West Bank but none of that will be more important to them than cooperation with Israel.

This is so patently obvious. And yet their leaders don’t give a squat. They would rather condemn more generations to poverty, ignorance and strife than simply accept the right of the Jews to their sovereignty in Israel.

The issues are so complex it almost seems impossible. There is so much that outside observers don’t even realize or know - especially all the anti-Israel agitators in the west.

Here is one example: the refugees. Gaza is already way overcrowded. Nobody is going to be moving into Gaza. As it stands, the only place they can settle is the West Bank. But, the West Bank residents include a large number of educated people, tradesmen, businesses, merchants, agriculture etc. Of course there are poor people and people with radical ideologies there, but for the most part it is kept under control. Now, ask those people if they want 1 million uneducated, unskilled people to suddenly move into their neighborhoods. The residents in the camps in Lebanon, for example, are deliberately denied access to education, jobs, training that ordinary Lebanese can obtain. They have been kept down.

So you want to talk about peace, and resolving all these issues - but the hard truth is the Palestinians are not really one people of one mind with one national aspiration. They are clannish people. Not saying that is necessarily a bad thing, it is what it is. But they don’t necessarily regard themselves as related to the people living in Lebanon or Jordan. And they sure as heck don’t want 1 million immigrants without skills, money or knowledge moving in. And there are way more than 1 million people claiming to be refugees.

So at the end of the day, who is really preventing peace? It’s the Palestinians. They have to find a way to resolve these issues for themselves. This is one of the major reasons why they can never get down to sign anything that even resembles a peace deal. They cannot sell it to their own people - not just because some of the radicals would prefer perpetual war, but because 1 million + people don’t want another million people showing up. So it serves their interests to do nothing, and to agitate foreigners to pressure Israel for nonsensical issues. They deflect their own internal problems into tangential complaints the types of which would be easily resolved if there were a sincere effort to make peace.

FWIW, there has always been a plan/idea floating around that a Palestinian state would lease a couple hundred square miles of land from Egypt in the Sinai, connected to Gaza, in order to develop housing and infrastructure to support a couple million new people (not to mention birth rate!).
