Christina Taft couldn't persuade her mother to flee the California fire, and she died
As Christina Taft walks through the chalky rubble and blackened ash strewn on her property in Paradise, Calif., she winces as she tries to make sense of the destruction around her.
"This is just completely levelled," she says.
"There is nothing here."
In the corner of what was once her living room, yellow caution tape ropes off a rectangle on the ground. It looks as if someone was digging in the area, and right away Taft knows why.
"This is where they must have found her."
This is the first time the 25-year-old has returned since she fled her home nearly two weeks ago when the Camp Fire destroyed nearly 13,000 structures, leaving entire neighbourhoods in the northern California community of about 27,000 unrecognizable.
More than 80 people are confirmed to have died in the fire, but hundreds of others are still unaccounted for.
This spot in Paradise is the final place where Taft saw her mother, 66-year-old Victoria Taft.
On the morning of Nov. 8, the neighbour with whom they shared their rental duplex knocked on their door, warning that a large fire burning to the east was spreading rapidly, and they should pack up and go.
Taft began loading the trunk of her car with photos, clothes and food, but her mother didn't think there was any need to panic.

The next time you are faced with danger from a natural disaster... Do the right thing and get the hell out of there.
This should be Jerry Brown’s Hurricane Katrina, but the media has his back.
I hate to see her blaming herself. It is not her fault. Was she to force her mom into the car? Or stay and die? She did the best she could do.
Mine as well.
Prayers for the family.
When in danger
or in doubt
hoist all sails
and haul ass out
Old Sailor saying - indicating getting off shore in storm conditions is a better choice - hence the term “Old Sailor” saying.
You are correct. Sadly, this isn’t the first time fire has swept the area....
The Left Media wish they had a Bush to blame it on. You know: a lamb willing to be slaughtered.
12,500 houses and buildings + 5,000 other structures, likely hundreds more dead to be found.
The town is gone. What was the point of having emergency services?
Their job is to preplan for emergencies, including conflagrations that happen constantly, all over CA. Every part of CA needs to realize that your turn for complete destruction is coming.
Preplanning means looking for threats and having an evacuation plan to get everyone out, if needed.
I know of some residents that plan to return, collect their insurance, and rebuild. They say they don’t care if they are surrounded by the burnt down town with minimal stores for years.
This is horrible but then the whole town was built inside a pile of kindling wood. All it takes is one match.
I went on Google Earth and looked at this area. I was surprised to see so little space between the forest and the homes. Everywhere in New England where homes are built on mountains there are usually 20-30 feet on each side of the home to protect the house from tree falls mostly, but it also acts like a firebreak.
What happen in Paradise is tragic, but a lot of it was preventable.
I read my Bible, so I know you're right.
It’s like people who refuse to evacuate for hurricanes. It’s their own business. Leave them be. If they croak, at least they made their own decision.
Same happened to a few folks who refused to leave Mount St. Helens when she blew her lid....
You assume that the enviro-whackos who hold sway in California government allow sensible forest management and tree removal at that level. They do not.

Manage the dang forest and remove dead brush and there’d have never been a fire in the first place.
It is difficult to get permission to trim even a 30 foot wide swath of Nature around your "own" property in many places.
Letting dead trees decompose returns nutrients to the forest floor, that's a Natural process!
If you want to remove dead trees not only are you Corporate Scum for wanting to profit from the bodies of dead trees, you are going against Nature!
Ive never been in a forest fire, but the thought of it always scared me. My parents built a log cabin in the middle of a forest. My Dad built it himself and he always said he did not want any tree falling on his house. Especially if it was on fire.
And we spent every damn weekend clearing out brush. I hated cleaning brush.
If the National Guard even under 0bongo comes along you have to leave.
My friend who lives on LI shore town wanted to stay in his house
to prevent looters from helping themselves but couldnt
