SACRAMENTO, Calif. A former state senator convicted of lying about his residence and three refugees from Vietnam who could face deportation are among 38 people pardoned Wednesday by Gov. Jerry Brown ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Browns pardons also include a man who just lost his Paradise home in a wildfire.
The Democratic governor also commuted the sentences of 70 people still serving time, including Walter Earlonne Woods, who co-hosts a podcast called Ear Hustle from inside San Quinton state prison.
Former Sen. Roderick Wright was convicted of felony charges of voter fraud and perjury in 2014 when a Los Angeles County jury determined he lived outside the district he represented. Some lawmakers at the time defended Wright, saying state law was ambiguous. The Legislature has since changed the law to make Wrights situation legal, and the state Supreme Court cleared the way for the pardon this week.
Wright was sentenced to 90 days in jail then released almost immediately.
Browns pardons of refugees, all of whom arrived in the United States as minors, are his latest effort to help immigrants whose crimes could make them eligible to be deported. He said theyve all completed their sentences and become upstanding citizens deserving of clemency.

Can’t they still face federal charges?
Well, it is California.
I often wonder why Vietnamese refugees go to California (Hold on). They are just leaving a harsher communist dictatorship for a “soft communist dictatorship”.
[Actually California has perhaps the largest So. Vietnamese communist in the US because when they came there in the 1970’s, it was a relatively sane, free state, and they have relatives there].
I hope they all vote Republican from now on.
Cant afford to have him behind bars. He needs to be out there preparing for the 2020 Democrat voter fraud.
That's right
You can at least visit Death Valley. It's just across the border from Nevada. You can even stay in a hotel in Nevada and commute for day hikes and drives. It's a beautiful place and has been minimally impacted by Californification.
Besides declaring California’s one party “Jungle Primary” unconstitutional. We need federal legislation outlining a US wide system that applies to all states to use for federal elections. Specifying who can vote.Requiring citizenship and residency verification registration performed by bi-partisan canvassed confirmation And No provisional, mail in, or same-day ballot issuance permitted.
Convicted ion 2014 for living outside his district?
Mad Maxine Waters has lived outside her district for FAR longer than that.
Sure proves there are different punishments for anyone other than Dems.
Only in CA, shaking head.
Roderick Wright is a Dem.
