Why is Theresa May rushing to Brussels on Wednesday when she has a fair few political headaches to contend with back home, and when she's due back here in just a few days for the seal-the-deal Brexit summit of EU leaders?
The answer: the Prime Minister wants to show she is fighting until the very last moment to get the best Brexit deal possible out of the EU. Her Wednesday afternoon visit to see Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the European Commission, provides her with a floodlit platform to do so.
Now the plan had been for the two leaders to discuss a draft text of the political declaration on post-Brexit EU-UK relations.
Mrs May wanted to push for even closer trade ties than the EU has been willing to concede so far without the UK staying in the single market.
Essentially she is very, very keen for her Chequers proposal for Brexit (viewed in EU circles as cherry-picking non plus ultra) to be reflected in the document.
However, the Brexit process has now got a lot more complicated. Meaning that the draft text on EU-UK future relations hasn't been finished in time for the prime minister to pick over.

two other good articles on bloomberg there about brexit as well, worth reading.
may has an easy chance to become a folk hero by cancelling further negotiations with the EU, rallying the brexiteers back around her (presuming she can regain their trust) and demanding a hard brexit as the only remaining sane course of action. the longer she puts this off, the more likely it is imho that she will get the axe and boris or rees-mogg will ride in to the rescue. the time for a vote on the backstop mess agreement is coming up very soon, iirc. but i suppose she wont do that. she is also on record as claiming to be the only person who can save britain or some such nonsense. that seems like an invitation to try to kick her out. no one person with the possible exception of churchill (and he passed away) should be able to claim that. it is a security vulnerability for one thing.
side question, are we the only two freepers obsessed with brexit right now?
I have family in London.
brexit does not seem to be a popular topic in british pubs
I do think a hard Brexit is bad for the UK, or indeed nearly any type of Brexit is bad for England-Wales (Scotland and NI would break away), but hey.
(1) Make a free trade deal and a military manufacturing pact with the United States. This would publicly end the EU's pretensions at being a counter-weight to the United States.
(2) Offer Italy, Spain, and other countries help if they too need to exit the EU. This would directly menace the EU's viability.
(3) Start blasting the EU and its hard negotiating position. Point out that it has gone from being a customs and currency union with nation members as partners to a prison run by Germany. Point out that if Britain has to make heavy payments to get out of the EU, then the organization's finances and bookkeeping must be riddled with fraud.
I am not quite obsessed with Brexit, just overly interested in it.
No, you’re not the only FReepers!
But, it is watching a tradegy unfold before your eyes and not being able to do anything to influence its course.
Only the news-speakers at the BBC could dream up a statement such as this: “she is fighting ... to get the best brexit deal possible out of the EU”.
I truely believe her personal plan is to trash BREXIT then hand the next general election on a plate over to Corbyn.
My own personal plan would be to see her head on a pole by Traitors Gate at the Tower of London - but that has as little chance of coming to pass now as a real brexit.

Couldnt agree more - and many more with her.
“viewed in EU circles as cherry-picking non plus ultra”
Either she means ne plus ultra, or a font size.
Very valid observation. No doubt it is true. All socialist schemes are like that. Has been so for centuries.
Nope. I live in England and I’m a bit on the worried side regarding the future!
Brexit is probably doomed. Trying to get independence from a bunch of crooks with negotiations will only lead to a fraudulent agreement that will change nothing. The Brits can’t get out of the EU without shooting their way out.
Not a penny to exit...
