Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the incoming U.S. representative from New York City, has an idea that could make voting easier: Take Columbus Day off the federal holiday list and replace it with Election Day.
In a tweet Saturday, the progressive Democrat wondered why Columbus Day is a federal holiday while Election Day, when we engage in perhaps our most important civic duty, is not.
Columbus Day, after all, celebrates a man who never actually set foot in what is now the United States and who certainly did not “discover” America.
Daily Mail editor David Martosko tried to make a joke about Ocasio-Cortez “angling for more vacation days” before even beginning her new job.

Why don’t we just have Election Weekend? Most people would have at least one day off. I believe Australia does this and other countries hold elections on Sunday. Worth a try.

Yeah, it’s not a bad idea, except that probably half the country doesn’t actually get a “Columbus Day” holiday.

Tuesday as a national holiday is good idea, but don’t touch Columbus Day! Since it is part of her heritage, shouldn’t she celebrate it?
What does this Ocasio-Cortez woman have against Italians. I heard she wants to cancel Columbus Day. Go talk to her and make her an offer she can´t refuse.

I vote absentee all the time but I would be willing to give that up if everyone except the military had to show up on election day.
That would only help people who work for a living.
My money's on "President's Day". After all, Washington and Lincoln are just two old dead white guys. Worse yet, Washington owned slaves!
