Hmmm. Since I don't it doesn't affect me but, since it can be directly linked to certain conditions, IF those conditions exist, then the question could arise. But mandatory? Like how many guns do you have in the house? Do you drive over the speed limit? In return, I suppose you could ask the doc if they have ever had a case of "medical misadventure" where a patient died due to negligence on their part. How much do you drink doc? Do you prescribe yourself meds or have a doc friend do it for you? Crickets.................. Remember, not all docs finished at the top, or even middle, of their class.

At least drinking is directly related to health. What happened to professional discretion, and the sanctity of a patient's relationship with his physician. I guess that just applies to abortion.

They should screen for liberalism:

Do you support baby killing?

Do you support government run healthcare?

Do you believe in man-made global warming?

Do you believe in open borders?

Do you support gun control?

This is no different than disclosing what you eat to your Dr. And then they recommend a change in your diet in order to improve your health. I’ve been asked during check ups before how much I drink. I don’t really see an issue with it.

I get asked this every time I get a physical. I say robotically, “I have a beer every time I eat chili and every time the Cowboys win a football game.”

They should STHU.

Yes I used H.

Be wary that this could be a back door way to go after peoples guns and gun rights. The govt. has access to all our medical records under Obamacare. If you get put down as an “alcoholic” (a very subjective label) you be denied the right to purchase a firearm when the background check is done. I believe evidence that one is a drug or alcohol addict is a basis for denying one the right to possess.

It's a first step on a slippery slope. A generic piece of advise during every exam should include: "Moderate alcohol use is recommended.

If the patient wants to go further, they're welcome.

I remember 20 years ago (before I stopped drinking) when my Dr. asked how many drinks I consumed each month....I lied and calculated about half and said 100. He said: “That might be a problem.” I thought at the time the problem wasn’t lying enough! 13 years sober next month.

If doctors are properly trained on identifying alcohol abuse, the signs will be noticeable without asking. Liver problems, high blood pressure, seizures, and pancreatitis aren't necessarily signs of alcoholism, but if a patient is exhibiting any of these, it should lead the doctor to ask more questions about alcohol use.

But to ask it of every single patient is a bit ridiculous.

Just lie.

My children know to lie if asked about guns at school, by a doctor, or where ever.

They know to lie about alcohol, too (although we don’t really drink very often or much).

They know to lie about religion and politics.

Don’t say “I refuse to answer”. That puts you on a list.

Just lie.

Essentially they already do — When they check your blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure is a dead give away to excessive alcohol consumption.

How do you think they find out if Airline Pilots and Military Aviators are having drinking problems — Annual physical. If the BP is up there other tests that provide the rest of the story (i.e. liver enzymes).

That question has been on every doctor form I ever filled out. It’s not new. It’s none of their business unless you are preparing for surgery.

If it were only for my doctor then that would be ok - as it could have an impact on my health - which I’m paying him to help me with.

But it’s not...It’s also for the insurance companies, the electronic medical database, the govt., etc

I tell’em I have a drink now and then and that’s it. Then I ask - is something showing up in the tests or exam that’s a concern? That usually shut’s them up. What really irritates me is when one of the assistants, nurses, admins asks me and not the doctor.

Here are the smart answers one gives to his doctor or staff.

Do you drink Alcohol?— No. I tried it in my youth but didn’t like it and haven’t drinken since.

Do you smoke tobacco ? — No. I tried it in my youth but didn’t like it and haven’t used it since.

Have you used marijuana or another controlled substance — No? Not even once.

Do you own or possess a firearm? — No. if you think you may be on record of owning tell them no. You felt they were unsafe so you destroyed the ones you had.

If your doctor asks you about your drinking, you ask him the same question!

I've got this nightmare vision - a society where squads of jackbooted nannies accost people on the street, looking for dirty underwear ("What if you're in a wreck?")

The sanitation team makes sure you washed your hands and did you wash behind your ears?

At dinner time they invade your kitchen or eavesdrop on your order at the restaurant ("Are you eating enough veggies?")

All for my own good, of course...
