Amazon’s HQ2 Spectacle Isn’t Just Shameful—It Should Be Illegal
The Atlantic ^ | November 12, 2018 | Derek Thompson

Posted on 11/13/2018 1:36:03 AM PST by Trump20162020

The rumored announcement has emboldened Amazon’s army of critics. Did the world’s smartest company really need 13 months, and applications from 238 cities, to reach the striking conclusion that it should invest in New York and D.C.? The former is America’s heart of capital, and the latter is America’s literal capital, where chief executive Jeff Bezos already owns a house and a newspaper.

Was this national auction nothing more than a scripted drama to raise the value of the inevitable winning bid? And did the retailer miss an opportunity to revitalize a midwestern city by choosing to enrich the already-rich east coast?

All good questions. But here’s the big one: Why the hell are U.S. cities spending tens of billions of dollars to steal jobs from each other, in the first place?

“Whenever someone says, “There should be a law”, they should be flogged. I am pretty sure we’ve covered most of the laws by now.”

Amazon is becoming huge, overwhelming actually. Other big box retailers are at risk of not remaining competitive. I’m wondering if this three way split is a strategic maneuver to deflect possible antitrust efforts by congress....

Atlantic magazine isn’t just shameful, it ought to be bound, gassed and set afire.

Bezos had to raise money to defray the cost of buying congress for democrats. Pay for play.

People who don’t believe in property rights think lots of things should be illegal. And people who think government rather than businesses create jobs say a business is stealing jobs when it moves.

Capitalists believe governments provide services such as incorporation, courts, roads, educated workers, and police, then make bids where the payment is taxes. Just like any other service provider it can cost a lot to respond to an RFP and the lowest $$ option isn’t always the winner.

Gov Nathan Deal in GA would not approve legislation that would protect churches from the pink mafia in hopes of getting this company to build there.

We're selling our soul for $$ in the US.

I knew from the initial announcement that they would end up in DC.

Every city that threw money after chasing an Amazon HQ that was never going to arrive should feel immensely foolish.

I hope they sue, too. The discovery on this case should be pretty awesome.

“Is Virginia irredeemable enough that the conservative portion would do better as a part of West Virginia?”

Sunday I was fantasizing about the rural counties leaving Va and either joining WVA or forming their own state.

I don’t think it could be worse than it is now.

New York and D.C. are lobbying outposts for the press and the government.

They make no other sense.

Reelection bragging rights. Been going on for a long time. Not usually as public as this, but anytime you hear about a big company adding a facility somewhere you know there was a graft war.

If Amazon were more interested in saving money than bribing DC and Wall Street, they would have picked a central US location with a favorable tax structure, reasonable weather, and space to build or expand a major airport to serve as a distribution hub - as FedEx did in Memphis. But companies which grow this large rapidly take on non-capitalist characteristics, and their quarterly profits are derived from lobbying as much or more than their operations.

Soliciting prospective bribes from dozens of other localities. It should be illegal.
