Rep. Jason Lewis blames House GOP defeat on John McCain
Washington Post ^ | 11/12/18 | Felicia Sonmez

Rep. Jason Lewis (R-Minn.), who lost his seat in last week’s midterm elections, is coming under fire for a Wall Street Journal op-ed in which he blames Republicans’ defeat at the ballot box on the late senator John McCain (R-Ariz.).

In the piece, titled “Who Lost the House? John McCain,” Lewis makes a novel argument: that McCain’s famous thumbs-down vote last year against a “skinny” repeal of the Affordable Care Act doomed Republicans by making it more difficult for them to counter Democratic claims that GOP lawmakers would do away with protections for those with preexisting conditions.

The catch, of course, is that if Republicans had ultimately succeeded in their efforts to repeal the health-care law, they would have done just that.

In the two lost House seats in Iowa, he’s exactly right. No GOP answer to the health care insurance debacle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The democrats “fixed” healthcare with obamacare which is a total disaster.
They won the House by promising to fix healthcare.
It proves that at least half the population is retarded.
Generally true, but sometimes they ARE decided on one issue.
Given the districts in Iowa then that one issue could have been tariffs and their impact on soybeans. It could have been the wall, or lack thereof. It could have been the deficit. Obamacare is only one possible reason, and I'll also point out that McCain wasn't the only Republican who voted against it. He's just a handy target.
The McCain headline is a bit misleading, as the GOP-E is certainly at fault. And the bulk of the punishment rightly came on them.
The top grain and meat producing counties In Iowa went GOP about as strong as ever. No hint of revenge over tariffs. Suburb-type areas, especially the women in them, voted on health care charity.
McCain’s objective was to hurt Trump. He succeeded.
The worst, though, was Ryan and the establishment deciding to vacate 40+ Republican seats giving the dems an enormous advantage going into the midterms. That was nothing short of sabotage.
Lewis is flat-out wrong on this.
As I've said many times here on FR, the GOP has never had any interest in repealing ObamaCare. Their problem is that the biggest beneficiaries of ObamaCare are older people -- a core constituency of the Republican Party.
The dirty little secret is that most Republican voters -- even many right here on FreeRepublic -- absolutely love most of the ObamaCare provisions that make health insurance so ridiculously expensive. They just don't want to pay for it.
Reminds me of this apocryphal exchange:
Enthusiastic voter: Governor, you have the vote of every thinking person!
Candidate Adlai Stevenson: That’s not enough, madam, we need a majority!
No argument there.
People are worried that Republicans favor repealing protection for pre-existing conditions. Pubs must deal with these concerns as a priority or they face a very bleak election in 2020.
McCain’s famous thumbs-down vote last year against a “skinny” repeal of the Affordable Care Act
Oh come on now, he had to vote no to make damned sure he got a seat at the same table as his daddy, Satan.
And on another front...............
A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on a tour. Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane.
At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically.
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."
The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."
"Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France !"
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained. "Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any damn Frenchmen to show it to."
Unfortunately, you are right. A lot of people believe in the right for someone else to pay for their “entitlements”. While ignoring that the price is ever increasing debt passed on to the next generation.
