In a post on his website, Young said he hoped the calamitous fires would urged people to take action on the impact of climate change.
Firefighters have never seen anything like this in their lives. I have heard that said countless times in the past two days, and I have lost my home before to a California fire, now another, he wrote. Hopefully we can come together as a people to take climate change on. We have the tools and could do it if we tried. There is no downside.

Cool pic, that is impressive. Beautiful home too, though I’d hate to have to clean it.

as I understand it one practically needs a court order to cut down trees or brush on your property to make a green space that helps prevent spreading fires....

Didn’t Neil lose a garage to an electric-car fire a few years back? Oh, the irony.

I wonder if, under the Law of Unintended Consequences, that homeowner has suffered any financial problems because he now owns the oldest house in the neighborhood. The reconstructed houses around him would have to conform to newer building codes, making his house less desirable on the market and possibly subject to increased insurance costs.
I say this as a former California resident all too familiar with the liberal lunacy out there. Got out in 2005 and have no intention of ever returning.

I’m sorry that they all have to move to the Beverly Hills Hilton.
I’m also sorry they have many possessions lots.

One other thing that Bui did that would be an added expense is to sheath the exterior with 5/8 Type X Gypsum Drywall, a fire resistant material. But when balanced against having the house burn down like all the rest it had to be a cheap investment.

“No good deed goes unpunished”
Bui purposely built to a higher standard than code; he had worked in Germany where buildings are intended last for centuries and he used what he had learned to build his own home, which he apparently did on his own.
Those homes weren’t very old when the fire went through. Bui started building his in 1989, only four years before the fire. Even if Laguna Beach dramatically increased their own requirements they probably wouldn’t exceed what he had done.
