The opening flute solo is from Claude Debussy, and it’s sheer genius that John Phillips and Lou Adler opened with it. The bassoon line is amazing! Phillips in his personal relationships was a heroin addicted monster, but what a genius!

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

HARD TO GET: ”YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY”

In the Fifties, Oscar tackled the various composers of the songbook. This 1952 entry is laid back and a lot of fun.

A Johann Strauss (Jr.) piece rarely heard outside the German speaking world.

Michelle’s favorite song was the Rodgers & Hart tune “My Heart Stood Still,” which the group turned into an anthem. Cass was the one who was a massive fan of Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart.

It’s the tale of how the group formed. John Sebastian, Barry McGuire and Jim McGuinn make appearances in the lyrics.

About a year ago, PBS did an “American Masters” show on the band. It was an eye opener.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

HARD TO GET: ”YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY”

Bobby was in a difficult spot. More than anything else, he wanted to be the next Sinatra. Frank appreciated this and respected Bobby’s rendition of “Mack the Knife” enough to never record or perform the song himself. But in the second half of the Fifties, if you wanted to make a splash, you had to do it with rock and roll. It’s hard to say whether this 1961 rendition is cutting edge or just terrible, but it was influential. Michael Buble’s version is based on it.

This was recorded later in the year by the Turtles. It's a P. F. Sloan tune. Sloan made a huge splash with "Eve of Destruction," but I always thought that "I Found a Girl," recorded by Jan & Dean, was his masterpiece.

Sloan died a few years ago. He and Jimmy Webb didn't get along.
