Matthew Whitakers tenure as acting attorney general may only be able to be measured in hours, but hes already made a huge impact in how asylum-seekers are processed at the southern border.
According to a new interim final rule from the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, those who enter the country illegally and are captured will no longer be able to claim asylum and will instead be returned to their country of origin on an expedited basis.
Consistent with our immigration laws, the President has the broad authority to suspend or restrict the entry of aliens into the United States if he determines it to be in the national interest to do so, Whitaker said in a joint statement with DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
Todays rule applies this important principle to aliens who violate such a suspension or restriction regarding the southern border imposed by the President by invoking an express authority provided by Congress to restrict eligibility for asylum.
Our asylum system is overwhelmed with too many meritless asylum claims from aliens who place a tremendous burden on our resources, preventing us from being able to expeditiously grant asylum to those who truly deserve it. Today, we are using the authority granted to us by Congress to bar aliens who violate a Presidential suspension of entry or other restriction from asylum eligibility.

The headline is a massive lie. The president only said they have to come to a port of entry he did not end asylum.
Say Jeremiah, does "Little" refer to your brain or some other part of your anatomy?
Buh Hye Mr. Magoo
I too have been disappointed in AG Sessions. Liked him much better as a senator but the one area he has been very effective in is illegal immigration. It’s pretty much his “thing”.
Yup. One of the reasons the caravan decided to break in through California.
Bet sessions did a last minute flip on this and wasn’t going to enforce it. I think he has been playing lip service and just giving us what we wanted to hear the whole time.
Actions speak louder than words... And there ain’t been much at all let alone in the right direction so far...
Well, we all have our causes.
Jeff has made strong statements on immigration, but they've been over-ruled in court. He's reportedly been very good about MS13.
But, on the other hand, after he started out with an unnecessary recusal, taken on the basis of advice from an administration lawyer held over from the Obama years, his first pronouncements where about pot and strategic re-implementation of civil forfeiture, which has been horribly abused for years.
Yeah, and you seem to have only one comeback line. So, go get a ‘freakin’ job.
Nor am I but he WAS a relatively feckless Attorney General.
First major issue was accepting the job knowing full well that he would recuse himself from all Russia investigation activities. And then compounding that error by not informing Trump prior to his recusing himself. Both inexcusable.
He has slow walked the Presidents demands for multiple documents and covered for the DOJ numerous times at the expense of the President.
He has many issues on which we agree and was an excellent Alabama Senator but this most definitely didn’t translate into being an effective Attorney General.
I do in some areas, but not this one. However, I observed that Obama was able to use his pen in a lot of matters, and especially in immigration-related matters. I appreciate that Trump is trying to do things legally and by the book, but it's an uphill battle.
How soon we forget.
At some point you are going to have to admit to yourself that Sessions had no intention of doing anything.
Trump knew what he was doing. It didn’t cut muster.
He was shown the exit.
From the recusal on, this man was a failure in his position as A. G.
I defended him for more than a year. He still had the opportunity to redeem himself.
He just never did.
The Russian recusal was
(a) dumb
(b) unnecessary.
Dems couldn’t believe their luck when one of Trump’s senior Cabinet members panicked like that.
Whitaker doesn’t look like he’s going to panic. In fact, it looks like the Dem-Media Complex will have a hard time intimidating him at all.
The meeting between him and the ever-outraged Elijah Cummings should be epic.
I just thank God and Greyhound he’s gone.
He’s the guy who Trump should nominate.
Jeff Sessions and Matthew Whitaker...the long and short of it.
Bttt.

I agree and I think that Trump was coerced into taking him on in the beginning in an advisory role pre-election and nominating him AG post-election. I imagine Trump has been working diligently to shed the chains he was shackled with. It is a miracle that he won both the primaries and the general election and it will be a miracle if he can shed all the dead wood and soldier on to do what needs to be done to preserve what most all of us perceive to be a country. I believe in miracles.
The shallow thinkers in the “Hate Sessions” club really need to think beyond the Fake Media. Which includes plenty of “conservative” sites and analysts, many of which were or are Never Trumpers.
So Trump is a feeble weakling who was coerced into taking Sessions.
Tsk tsk.
If Sessions was bad, odd how he instantly changed from a courageous, principled and honest lifelong history into “bad” overnight once he became AG.
