I am going to throw this out there as an incomplete idea, in the hope that some of our more astute FReepers can put some real thought into it, and make some serious suggestions. I believe that a certain level of "gun violence" is a price we pay for freedom. I also believe that a good deal of that violence associated with drug crime and the like could be addressed and minimized with harsher penalties and a widespread program to both saturate violence prone communities with knowledge of those penalties, demonstrate to members of those communities that cooperation with police WILL remove killers permanently from their midst, and move more aggressively against gangs. I think this sort of approach could literally cut "street" murders in some of these places, like Chicago, in half.
However, this does not address the problem of what are, quite simply in most cases, "crazies" shooting up schools and other places where people gather to work, pray, play, learn, and so on. While the actual numbers of people killed in these incidents are not actually very large, they DO get a great deal of media and "anti-gun" attention. That attention is not entirely unwarranted: It is a lot easier to be very upset about some lunatic murdering sometimes numerous innocent people, especially the young, at a time, than it is when it's gangs and / or drug dealers going at each other.
Now, the troubling thing is that in almost all these mass killing incidents, there are indications before the killer starts murdering people that a loose nut has begun rolling around. Gun control advocates advocate their arguments, failing to realize that their approach will not be very effective, here in the US: There is simply too much "weaponry" in public hands to reduce it's prevalence enough to keep guns out of the hands of evil doers. In addition, many millions of righteous people will NOT peaceably give up their means of defense against all sorts of threats: Confiscation attempts would lead to a hot civil war with deaths dwarfing what is happening now. Essentially the control / confiscation advocates hasten the day TSHTF, and most likely worsen it. People like David Hogg and Nancy Pelosi have NO idea what forces they are messing with.
On "our" side, we often hear that "we" need to lock up the loonies. But who is "we"? Do we want the State to have the power to confiscate weapons from anyone they deem a threat? And how long is it before this sort of power devolves into politically based decisions, rather than true mental health based decisions? Safeguards? Uh, is this like our Constitutional "safeguards" to keep Government small and limited? And do we need to gum up our courts further, with millions of contested cases (because that's where it will likely end up)?
I suggest that perhaps, somehow, the answer is in the "we" I just mentioned. We who support our 2nd Amendment rights are best suited to do the policing. The question, my question, is, how to accomplish this? I think a requirement is that we have to have serious "skin in the game' -- ie., direct financial risk if we judge poorly or irresponsibly. Beyond this is where I fully admit this notion is not "complete". I perceive all sorts of legal hurdles, but I am no legal or even Constitutional "expert". I can even see that perhaps the 2nd Amendment needs to be modified for less room for interpretation or distortion, but I am hardly the person to come up with the language! Maybe with that clarity the freedoms end could be in practice expanded, but perhaps the idea of more responsibility for it's beneficiaries needs to be addressed as well. (Is the old Swiss System defined comprehensively in their Constitution? I have not looked it up.)
What do FReepers suggest?
My point is “anyone” can make a gun and more gun laws will simply leave the innocent unarmed regardless.
I agree with you 100%-—However, power hungry people looking to destroy and overtake will never let that happen. Sadly they have infiltrated every aspect of our society like termites in a home...you don’t notice them until it’s too late. I honestly do not know the next step other that praying and seeking God’s direction on the matter. I do believe that simple directive on the “truth” are NOT enough to change our society. A spiritual awakening in Christ would be in order.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t hold my breath for that one. We need to come TOGETHER and concentrate all efforts and funding on one target at a time instead of diluting these efforts a thousand directions at one time. Example the 2nd amendment. It needs to be recognized that California problems are actually national problems for us all.
Starting with hard hitting constitutional suits in Ca concerning firearms. Firearms owners in Ca just do not have the numbers and funds to do it themselves. And everyone of these in Ca are indeed also our problem no matter where we live in the country.
Every time Ca is allowed to pass an unconstitutional firearms law the other states jump on the bandwagon and say “If Ca got away with it, Then we can too”. Since everyone of these laws originate from Ca that is where we seriously need to focus every national asset available.
The whole nation and every firearm organization need to come together and put the crosshairs on one selective target at a time with the knockdown firepower only a whole nation working together can deliver. This is what the left does and why they have been so successful. It’s not the amount of dollars... It is the very focused targets they go after with these dollars one at a time.
We need to dogpile these legal questions in Ca and dump every national fund and volunteerism we can muster into the local Ca firearms organizations to back them up one suit at a time with a vengeance. Once these are ruled as unconstitutional, all the other states in the union will be forced to follow suit and the whole nation benefits with every single suit won in Ca.
I am a Citizen of Az yet I dump hundreds of dollars a year in donation to the Ca Rifle and Pistol Association because this is where my 2nd amendment money is best spent to make an actual change nation wide. The smartest thing we could do is make this idea and concentrated effort go viral ASAP and take Ca down as an example of what happens when you blatantly pass unconstitutional laws.
The NRA is never going to make this extreme of an effort in Ca. and we we will all lose everywhere. It is time to directly crowd fund the locals in Ca. Our money will be much better utilized towards protecting the 2nd for the whole nation as a result.
This post may get pulled but if we’re looking for a solution to a problem we must first identify the problem.
Let’s face it folks, the only way to change the minds that want to eliminate private gun ownership is to eliminate those minds. I know, I know, we’re above that kind of action. We’d never stoop to that sort of thing - after all, “they” are the ones who use violence to advance their agenda and we don’t want to be like them - right?
Well, we’re not like them, are we? They’re winning and we’re losing. Oh sure, We managed to elect Trump and he’s taking the fight to them rather than reacting when they hit him, but he’s an anomaly, a fluke that - if we don’t act decisively - will never again see the light of day in our lifetimes.
Yes, the schools are terrible but so is the media and the ‘deep state’ of unelected bureaucrats. The Communist party has spent years infiltrating all those groups and now we’re just beginning to feel the pain we should have seen coming when we first allowed any of it to start. But we were too busy enjoying our new cars, our televised sports and the countless varieties of bad beer.
So now we pay - a little bit - doping and drugging our minds so we won’t think about our children and grandchildren who will LITERALLY pay with their lives for what we have left them. By taking the easy way we have doomed them to early death or abject slavery.
If you think I’m exaggerating I suggest you spend a bit of time interacting with some homeless people. They’re the canaries in the coalmines of modern society. They come from all walks of life, from destitute to middle-class families and even an occasional ex-businessman. We will be right there with them in a few years if the liberals have their way.
But first we have to be disarmed. Like the hammerlock they have on education, media and politics, they’re working slowly, but always in the same direction. It may already be too late but if we don’t do something soon, they’ll win by default. We need to not only show up for the game, we need to get there ahead of them and beat the snot out of them when they finally walk onto the field.
Now then, for those who are wondering what I’m talking about, remember the ‘Bill Clinton Rules of War.’ During the Balkans War, he ordered airstrikes on civilian radio and television stations that were reporting news he didn’t like. So, according to our government the media is as much a target as a missile site. Who knows how much farther he might have expanded his efforts. By his logic he could have included University professors and relatively minor political operatives.
Have a nice day.
