Six Off-Duty Police Officers Were Inside Borderline Bar When Shooting Started

THOUSAND OAKS, California — Six off-duty police officers were inside the Borderline Bar & Grill on Wednesday night when a gunman opened fire on those present.

Twelve people were killed as the gunman, who has been identified as David Ian Long, attacked the bar using a smoke device and a .45-caliber handgun. Many of those present were young people, on hand for “college night.”

Captain Garo Kuredjian, Media Relations Officer for the Ventura County Police Department, told Breitbart News on the scene that there had been three officers from the Oxnard Police Department and three from the Los Angeles Police Department inside the Borderline, all off duty.

They were likely unarmed, he said, though he could not yet confirm that information, nor could he yet say if and how they had assisted victims or confronted the gunman.

“Typically, if you go to a bar, if you’re going to be drinking,” you would leave your gun at home, Kuredjian said.

Like the other poster pointed out, it seems they were unarmed. Off-duty cops are instructed to carry everywhere except where they drink, it seems.

I strongly suspect that is the work of risk management types at the insurance carrier for the municipality that employs them.

I did some of my best drinking off duty, fully armed. But that was a different America ago.

So, you disparage all cops because of a few bad ones?

I thought all cops off duty still carried.

They'd be really stupid not too. Most big city cops who've been around the block have lots of enemies. They've sent people to jail for years at a time. Many of these people directly blame the cops for destroying their lives and vow to get even. Lots of enemies.

Not carrying off duty is just flat out stupid from my perspective..Did it happen here? I dunno.

I love the scene in “Beverly Hills Cop” when Eddie Murphy gets Taggart and Rosewood to go into the strip club with him. Murphy soon figures out that a robbery is being set and stops the whole thing. He tries to give credit to Taggart and Rosewood, but they admit to their boss that they were just hanging out in a strip club while on duty.

When I used to give classes to new agents, my comment was to avoid mixing any 2 of the three Bs as those were what would get you in trouble. Of course that was 40+ years ago. The 3 Bs were Bullets, Booze, and Bimbos.

Today of course that would be non PC. Today has the specter of having yourself sued out of existence if you try to do the right thing and make a slim mistake or worse prosecuted for manslaughter.

Plenty of cops play sports. For instance softball. They leave guns in the car. Think about it. How would you keep track of a firearm while playing?

I think cops are supposed always to carry, even off-duty. However, that means that they probably shouldn’t have a drop of alcohol to drink — ever. So, the prudent thing to do if they plan on even having a beer is to leave their guns at home. Otherwise, they’ll be blamed for firing after having drunk alcohol, or NOT firing even though they are carrying. Best to be accused of not carrying their guns off-duty.

No, I disparage all cops because those who are “generally good” do nothing to get rid of the ones that are obviously bad, but rather close ranks behind the Blue Wall.

I can only speak as a right to carry person in SC and what we were taught. Most states allow you to carry into a bar, provided the bar doesn't make itself a gun-free zone. Property rights trump the right to carry onto someone else's property. But the allowable alcohol level is zero. Not a drop. You have any alcohol and your right to carry and all the protections afforded to you are gone. You might as well not have one. If you are licensed (a police officer or civilian) and go to a bar to drink, you wouldn't take your gun. If I had my gun on me and unexpectedly decide to stop, I would separate the gun from the bullets and lock the gun in the trunk. Some of the comments here against the police are just plain ignorant (it was just a few). Especially when one lost his life charging in. Sure, if you are standing next to the guy when he starts to fire, it makes sense to tackle them. But charging a person firing a gun, with no protection, is moronic. I would not expect anyone to do that. They would die, not stop a thing, and just up the body count.

It’s up to the individual Officer. It’s not required. You have a “duty to act” but are not required to carry, especially if you are going to be drinking.
