Jason Blum Gets Booed and Removed from Stage After Speaking Out Against Trump at L.A.s Israel Film Festival
Blum was at the festival to accept the 2018 Achievement in Film & Television Award.
Jason Blum spent the night of the midterm elections at the Israel Film Festival in Los Angeles, where he was on hand to receive the 2018 Achievement in Film & Television Award. Blum attempted to speak out against Donald Trump while making his acceptance speech, but his comments did not go over well with the crowd. Variety reports the mega-producer was booed and heckled by the crowd, and he was eventually removed from the stage.
A lot is on the line, the last two years have been hard for all of us who cherish the freedom as citizens of this country, Blum said at the start of the speech, which immediately attracted boos from the audience. As Blum continued, Variety reports some audience members began to walk out of the event held at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills.
The great thing about this country is that you can like Trump, but I dont have to, and I can say what I feel about it and I dont like it! Blum said. As you can see from this auditorium, its the end of civil discourse. We have a president who calls the press the enemy of the people. Thanks to our president, anti-semitism is on the rise.
Yossi Dina, an Israeli pawnbroker, jumped onstage and attempted to pull Blum offstage. The crowd cheered and clapped at Dina, who eventually backed off after a woman called security.
Enjoy the movie, and I love and respect all of you, Blum said. Now Im being physically removed, which is why Trump is not the right guy.
Blum later took to his Twitter page, reacting to the night by writing, Well, this night kind of went haywire.
Blum is the founder of Blumhouse Productions, which had blockbuster success last month with the release of David Gordon Greens Halloween. The companys upcoming releases in 2019 include M. Night Shyamalans Glass, Jordan Peeles Us, and Happy Death Day 2U.
Wasn’t going to any of those movies anyway, but now I’ll make a special effort not to get dragged into going.
Why can’t people just go to an event for the purpose of that event, and leave politics aside for a few hours? I say this as an admitted political junkie - life is not 100% about politics. This guy is just a conceited ass.
It’s an extremely unpleasant experience to be a captive audience member when the keynote speaker veers off into anti-Trump remarks. This has happened to me twice. The sad thing is, everyone sits there totally intimidated, remaining quiet, not wanting to stand out in any way. What gives these people the right to veer from the expected topic and then just rant and rave?
Sounds like an aspiring Harvey Weinstein 2.0 to me.
Yep, thank your mom, thank your wife, thank God, and thank the guys who did 90% of the work that you are getting the award for, then take a bow.
“I’ve never heard of this guy. Is there something that makes him important?”
Yes. He’s a powerful producer in today’s Hollywood.
He did property acquisition (buying films) for some major studios for many years if I recall correctly. And he still has a first-look agreement with one, I think Universal.
He branched out on his own to produce low-budget films (that’s typically $5 million+ in Hollywood) that have a high likelihood of netting big returns on investment. He has been very successful at this business model, mostly doing horror films.
He was one of the many decision makers who passed on Blair Witch Project which went on to make tons of money at the box office due to clever marketing (not so much quality filmmaking). He learned from that mistake and took a risk on Paranormal Activity, which was a micro-budget film (shot for $15,000) that made millions and launched a very profitable franchise (now with 6 films under that moniker).
Hollywood wants our money at the box office and in subscription fees to cable TV, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. But they want us to shut up and embrace their enlightened thinking on homosexual sex, abortion, religion, socialism, and lots more that they are the self-appointed experts on. Free speech and freedom of thought is only for those who share their enlightened thinking. Conservatives are unwelcome in Hollywood.

Nice compact list of movies I will never see (not that I enjoy that genre of crap). Wild non-sequitur brownshirt rant from Blum.
Nope, and this may be controversial to say, but I think Israeli Jews are a entirely different segment of the world than liberal Hollywood Jews like Blum. Unlike American Jews, Israeli Jews know what it is like to fight for their safety and freedom. In short they have a rough tough realistic outlook on the real world, rather than the Hollywood filtered make believe world of other Jews.
OMG Los Angeles????????????
This happens dozens of times to conservatives, but this ONE time allows those who claim “ both sides do it.”
A puissant phrase that drives me crazy.
“The sad thing is, everyone sits there totally intimidated, remaining quiet, not wanting to stand out in any way.”
He’s clearly never been in Israel when someone cuts in line at the Tiv-Ta’am (a mildly crappy giant supermarket chain in Israel).
He’s lucky he didn’t get his ass beat.
“Thanks to our President, antisemitism is no longer being ignored”
I note the new Democratic Rep from Somalia (er, I mean Minnesota) wrapped herself in the “Palestinian” flag for her election party and called for the death of all Israelis.
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.

Another award winning mega producer I've never heard of.
The Israeli Jews are tough. What on earth were they doing in LA? Very nasty environment for an Israeli event.
“Is there something that makes him important?”
