WASHINGTONPresident Trump is expected to sign a directive this week that will make official his plans to revamp the U.S. asylum system, part of his broader push to crack down on undocumented migrants entering the U.S. illegally.
Mr. Trump is expected to sign the directive as early as Friday morning, before leaving on a trip to Paris, administration officials said. Last week, Mr. Trump said he intends to sign a comprehensive executive order on the detention of apprehended migrants, including those seeking asylum status.
According to the directive, U.S. officials will require asylum seekers to go to a point of entry along the border and make a claim for asylum, which would bar those who cross illegally. Currently, migrants who cross the border into the U.S. have up to a year to request asylum, regardless of how they got here.
The argument being made by the administration is that this change will enable safer, more orderly processing and better resource planning, an official said.
The officials, who have seen a draft of the directive, said the intention is to implement the directive temporarily, although a time period wasnt specified.
Mr. Trump said last week he wants to keep undocumented immigrants apprehended at the border in detention until their legal cases are heard, rather than allow them to be released into the U.S. to await a hearing.
The new directive follows Mr. Trumps order to send thousands of U.S. troops to support border-control efforts. The president has also said he would sign an executive order ending birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants, a proposal legal scholars say would be unconstitutional.

President Trump needs to exercise executive power like no one has ever seen before to protect the country.
And of course, the RATS will go nuts about Trump interfering with their voter base machine....
Most of these alleged asylum seekers are actually seeking welfare.
Trump has thousands of points he could touch upon where the laws are being ignored or intentionally misinterpreted.
Hawiian Judge to issue injuction in 5...4...3...
That’s good. I have no objection to people getting asylum who really need it (Asia Bibi, ME Christians, for ex.?) but they’ve got to go through the procedures BEFORE they get into the country and not just march right in.
Also, the definition of the basis for “asylum” has got to be clarified, since some of the Muslims we let in (who since have caused trouble) were claiming “asylum” because they were actually being pursued by the legitimate government of their countries for acts of Islamic terrorism or attempting to overthrow that government for Islamist purposes.
Also, asylum doesn’t apply if you just don’t like where you are! In that case, go about the regular immigration procedure.
Trump is not saying no immigration, but simply that the US has the right to control it, know exactly who it is letting in, and choose who gets to enter. Every other country does (well, except for some of the EU countries, who are being forced to open the doors for any and all Muslims).
Trump to ignore Hawaiian Judge in 2...1
If an Hawaiian judge issues a restraining order, can we put them on a boat and send them there?
These immigrants have already turned down asylum in Mexico, so they are not really seeking asylum.
If you want to enter someone’s house you knock at the front door. You don’t break-in through the window.
Prediction: You are not going to see any more “migrant caravans” over the next two years.
Democrats are not going to want to give Trump opportunities to bludgeon them for not funding the wall.
Supreme. Lift to overrule in 3/2:1
...a proposal some [but by no means all] legal scholars say is unconstitutional.
That’s exactly what they have been doing for ages — trying to slip in, undetected and illegally, wherever they can. Only when/if they get caught do they assert some sort of asylum claim.
I wouldn’t even allow them in for detention and adjudication unless they can bring with them documentation that they have attempted asylum and been turned down for no good cause at every country between here and there. That would remove all these caravaners from consideration in that we know Mexico offered it to them, as opposed to turning them down.
Fantastic news. Trump is right.
Damn paywall.
good!
i am willing, probably more willing than many readers of this little epistle,
to provide asylum for genuinely-needy cases
but NOT for a (SorozNazi-type funded/organized) Invasion Army !!!! (dammmmmit!)
no way!
I really wish Trump has brought this up yesterday when Acosta called them Migrants. Either they are Asylum Seekers or Migrants, they cant be both.
The President doesn't ignore judge's orders.
What's going to happen is that the issue of circuit or district judges issuing national injunctions is going to reach the Supreme Court, which is going to bar the practice. Then a Hawaiian judge can issue an injunction covering Hawaii, but not the country.
