President Trump is very seriously considering whether to declassify a slew of FBI and Justice Department records related to the Russia investigation, he said Wednesday. That controversial proposal, which Trump has toyed with for months, may have a backer in Matthew Whitaker, the acting attorney general.
Declassification, were looking at very seriously, Trump told reporters in a press conference on Wednesday, just before Attorney General Jeff Sessions was forced to resign.
Whitaker, who served as Sessions chief of staff, will take over as acting attorney general. In that role, he will oversee the special counsels investigation into Trump associates links to Russia. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had directed the investigation because Sessions recused himself due to contacts he had with Russians while working on the Trump campaign.

I think if the real story is ever known, Sessions was not really DJT's first choice for AG, but was pushed on him by the deep state.
Remember there was a lot of resistance, even from the R side, at the start.
DJT has learned fast and well.
The best President of my lifetime.
The Sessions removal was long overdue and lets hope it bears fruit down the road.
I thought it was MI5 and MI6 holding him back per personally asking him not to declassify everything
Rosenstein cant stop him
Do it!!!!!!!!
Trump called for this before, and nothing happened. Who knows why, but they weren’t released.
As you suggest, releasing these documents could have all kinds of implications including legal, especially for anyone mentioned who is facing possible charges and trial.
I know a retired spook who says that stuff we’d like to see is being held back out of deference to several of the ‘Five Eyes’, and not just the Brits.
More than one agency was involved in spying on candidate, and then President elect, Trump. And probably other rivals of Hillary and Obama as well, the conspirators weren’t just spying on him.
If you’re following the George Papadopoulos story you’ll be able to figure out who all was involved. Papadopoulos appears to have been an unwitting target set up and used as an excuse to spy on Trump.
I suspect one goal will be to have him release his tax returns just as all recent presidents and candidates have done. Sure they are complicated, but they can be examined and boiled down to much simpler statements that we can all understand. How can we be asking Democrat candidates to release theirs if he won’t release his. Won’t we want to know how much Soros or the Chinese have aided a Dem candidate? Shouldn’t we want to know if our president is beholden to Russia in a compromising way?
Sessions mistake was not recusing himself, it was failing to notify the POTUS that he would recuse himself.
He would not have been nominated for the AG Post if he had.
We also would still have a powerful Republican Senator from Alabama. The Rats didn’t even run against him the last time he was reelected.
Strongly disagree. Barring due process of law, no citizen should be required to release tax returns. That would be an open door to the type of witchhuntimg we see now.
“I think he realizes release of these and more documents, unredacted, could upend the lives of people only peripherally connected to the actual corruption”
Too bad so sad. Maybe the needs of the country sometimes come ahead of their life not being upended. The concept is VERY familiar to every grunt who has carried a rifle for our nation.
I know it’s shocking, but maybe even people in DC have to do their duty sometimes.
“Strongly disagree. Barring due process of law, no citizen should be required to release tax returns. That would be an open door to the type of witchhuntimg we see now.”
Bingo.
“I thought it was MI5 and MI6 holding him back per personally asking him not to declassify everything”
I cannot imagine why they would do that except for one reason. British intel was assisting in an effort to meddle in the 2016 election. And they weren’t just unwitting. They knew what the CIA was doing, and Theresa May was working against Trump.
This was a CIA regime change operation, this time conducted against the American government.
Trump disclosed his finances as required by law.
His opponents want his tax returns to go on a fishing expedition.
Given the level of anxiety these secret documents have been used to create in the minds of the American people we deserve to see them now. That concern now overshadows any other concerns about revealing them even if assets have to be relocated and programs have to be prematurely ended.
This entire situation was created by DemonRats. It’s on them.
Recent President’s and candidates generally release a synopsis of their tax returns not the whole thing. Trump has already done that and has explained on numerous occasions that the synopsis (it has a form name and number that I forget) is much more telling than if you saw the whole 5ft high worth of documents. With that many pages, one paragraph could be mistaken for any nefarious thing someone wanted to make it.
He also has released his taxes from previous years that are no longer under audit. But as Madcow showed, there was nothing wrong with them.
I swear the Dems think he does his own taxes. He pays very expensive lawyers to do his taxes and keep everything legal.
You are talking the difference between freedom and security. You can’t have both.
Constitutionally, we are all to be protected in our papers and our persons. If a person has committed a probable crime, the next step is to obtain a warrant. Perhaps then, a review of his private papers is in order.
They already know Trump hasn’t violated any laws regarding Russia. They are simply pissed, because he won’t reveal his wealth. They can’t force him to either. All they can do is try to blackmail him. Mueller has a professional reputation and history of such.
The unredacted FISA warrants tell a tale of horrific illegalities against Americans, not just trump.
Its unamerican to scrape together every facet of a person’s life in order to fit a fabricated crime, as was done to Kavanaugh.
Actually, both he and his opponents both know that his detailed taxes would contain many things that a non-billionaire would not understand, but would also misconstrue as somehow "cheating" or evading taxes.
His opponents would have a field day emphasizing perfectly legitimate practices.
