There are a lot of reasons for Democrats to be cheery on Wednesday, but the outcome of the midterm Senate races is not one of them. With three key races (Arizona, Florida, and Montana) still too close to call, and the Mississippi race going to a runoff, Democrats are looking at a potential 45-55 make-up in Republicans' favor in 2019. "It's not the only important takeaway, but one important takeaway from last night is that it's going to be basically impossible for Democrats to have a governing coalition if they beat Trump in 2020," explained Vox's Dylan Matthews.
The math could look like this: In 2020, Democrats would need to hold all of their current Senate seats including Alabama plus flip six held by Republicans, including in all likelihood Arizona and Georgia, as well as places like Iowa, Colorado, Maine, and North Carolina.

I think this was all about 2020 - and Trump is really well set-up after last night. When he wins in 2020 he will sweep large numbers of house seats, with a 60 vote Senate majority well within reach. And the comparisons of success over the last two years over the next two will make it even easier to win in 2020 - talk about a set-up for victory!
One of the ironies of yesterday’s results is that I believe Trump has a much better chance of getting re-elected in 2020 with the Democrats in control of the House. It gives the GOP a ready-made excuse NOT to pass any legislation they never wanted to pass in the first place, and it gives Trump a great punching bag in that doddering old dingbat Pelosi.
I want to see every vacant Judicial seat (District and everything) filled by 2020 - that’s our #1 priority.
Are you saying Trump is playing the long game?
The best thing for Trump is for the Democrats try to pull on him what they did to Kavenaugh.
And for added bonus, there are Democrats that DO NOT want Pelosi to get the gavel. The infighting might be fun to watch.
Senate is safe so bring on those Federal Judges and while you are at it somebody do a pulse check on Ginsburg, hold a mirror under her nose.
Heres my one concern about 2020 coming out of last night. The three surprise states Trump won in 2016 (PA, WI and MI) all had statewide elections on the ballot and Republicans lost all including healthy margins in PA and MI. So they reverted to form as D states. The question for 2020 will be whether Trump can keep that coalition going in these states.
Yes, we should end up with 54. Once again, the ‘purists’ allowed a runoff to happen in a deep Red State by splitting their votes.
We will definitely win back the Ala. seat.
Purists had nothing to do with it.
There was no primary.
To be able to take the Senate the demoncraps are going to have to take over flyover.
That is reason number one why we need the Wall.
Trump didn’t win those states as a Ryan Republican. Unfortunately, he governed as a Ryan Republican. Tax cuts for wealthy, no infrastructure, no wall. This claim of “promises delivered” wasn’t true, his populist promises weren’t delivered. He’s got to change that if he wants to win the rust belt again in 2020
McConnell made a decision NOT to contest Senate sears in PA, Mi, and WI. If we had then it would have limited our losses in the house and subiurbs. McConnell did not care about the house. In fact, he loves divided govt as it gives him an excuse not to move on legislation. He only has to deal with judicial and administrative appts while agreeing to continuing resolutions.
Paul Ryans cowardice was an albatross around house candidates and we had 40 retirements. Without those two events we could have held the House
Troll! Troll!
Fake post drivel
I wouldn’t be too concerned about that just yet. All three of those states had been reliable Democrat states in presidential elections, but they’ve been supporting many GOP candidates in statewide races over the years. The other thing to remember here is that Trump won in 2016 with the support of a LOT of Democrat voters in those states.
Now that a lot of RINO's are being purged from Congress, it wouldn't hurt to start purging GOP management down to the state and county levels. RINO's can be replaced with deplorables, and the first to go need to be people that put self-interest ahead of the country's interests.
Its a shame, Barletta could have won if he'd had competent backing.
His main promises to the Rust Belt were to revive factory and mining jobs, increase wages and the economy, to keep us out of the globalist TPP, and revise NAFTA to be fairer to the US. He did all of those against all odds.
Your comment sounds like a Dem propaganda ad. You mean tax cuts for those wealthy job creators that has caused a boom in jobs, stunning economic growth, and an increase in wages, especially for the poorest workers as the official stats prove?
And how can Trump be blamed for the wall, when hes done all he can with that so far in the face of Congressional opposition? At least sections are going up in the highest traffic areas of the border. He has done more to stop and deport illegals than any president since Eisenhower, even with his hands tied, which is why the press goes nuts against him with his every move on the subject. You must have missed the thousands of troops he sent to help secure the border.
Trump promised to RAISE taxes on wealthy hedge fund managers. Instead, the Ryan Bill cutvtheir taxes — while increasing the taxes on middle class people in high tax states like NY and Calif
And you knew who the favorite GOP candidate was and could have put her over the top with 50% of the vote. Instead you have to go to a runoff. Hopefully, in the runoff, there will be problem holding the seat.
“Hopefully, in the runoff, there will be problem holding the seat.”
Freudian slip?
No, I hope we hold the seat.
