St. Louis Suburbs See Heavy Turnout
WSJ ^ | 11-6-2018 | Erin Ailworth

If the volume of early and absentee voting is any indication of voter interest in this election, polling places in the counties in the suburbs of St. Louis, Mo., will be packed Tuesday.

Rich Chrismer, the long-time elections director in St. Charles County, said Monday his team had already seen 11,000 walk-in voters compared to the typical 2,000. Mail-in absentee ballots, he said, were also way up.

"It almost looks like a presidential election," said Mr. Chrismer, who said voters in his county were motivated by the battle over the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the tight race between incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill and her challenger, Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, a Republican.

MO is Deep Red.

How Deep Red? The crowd in Cape Girardeau last night was pumped up.

Enthusiasm is literally off the charts.

“I call it for Hawley.”

I’m cool with that. But by how much? Other than the center cities of KC and St. Louis, it’d seem that McCaskill would be popular with suburban soccer moms and suburban millennial women.

Depends on which suburbs are turning out.

The older, close-in ones (St. Louis County) are dead-red (Commie) which whites have been fleeing for years, with the resulting skyrocketing Dem percentages that would be expected under those conditions.

St. Charles County is the biggest *good* suburban county in the area, but not quite large enough to offset the bad areas closer to the city. Jefferson County to the south is a more blue-collar area that has been trending slightly to the right in recent years, so between those two we could balance out the effect of the Gibs-Me-Dat voters in the close-in suburbs but it will be tight.

In the suburbs, Democrats are banking on high turnout from soccer mommies and other brain-damaged white women who are easily emotionally manipulated by the media. Not just in Missouri, but everywhere.

This is a state Trump won by 20 pts. He had a rock star reception last night.

Good news?

Normally, no. But the whole trump thing has completely changed the rules. Republicans have never been this fired up. We have never had so much political activity and conversations, thanks to social media really coming of age.

I suspect a rout, one direction or the other.

It means they will want to hold polls open in the ‘hood while they bus voters around.

Good news?

BTW, the good news about high voter turnout on both sides is that fraud is more difficult. You don’t want to see more votes cast than voters. :)

St. Louis suburbs are mostly deep red. Bodes well for the GOP.

I'm in south St. Louis County, primarily a blue-collar, union kind of area. Our state rep and state senator are Democrats. I voted at lunch time; light but steady turnout.

Haven't seen many yard signs of any type.

Hawley has been all over TV, and he has decent ads. But he is an uninspiring candidate. His big advantage is that McCaskill has really made people mad with her two-faced ways of campaigning- all except the lunatic fringe.

MO is like IL. Once you leave the city limits, things lean sharply to the right.

I know MO. I got family there. Clair is very tough to beat. Do you think she can lose this time?
