The H-1B, intended for jobs requiring specialized knowledge and a bachelor’s degree or higher, has become a flashpoint in America’s immigration debate, with tech companies pushing for an expansion of the annual 85,000 cap on new visas, and critics charging that U.S. firms use it to supplant American workers with cheaper, foreign labor.

85,000 H-1B visas plus 85,000 H-4 visas for their spouses annually.

Because no Americans want to work in high tech jobs, right?

The H-1B, intended for jobs requiring specialized knowledge and a bachelor’s degree or higher...

In practice the specialized qualification that H-1Bs bring is the ability to work for a much lower salary than American workers.

Trump should sic an array of prosecutors on these companies.

The chances that ANY of them are using those visas legitimately is zero.

They are ALL engaged in wide-scale visa and employment fraud and executives at all of these companies ought to be looking at jail time.

Turning educated engineers into slave labor so no American will study engineering so they have no choice but to rely on cheap imported labor.

The bipartisan Treason Lobby will be very upset if they can’t continue to replace their educated American workforce with thousands and thousands of Indian imports.

They’ve paid good money to crooked pols like Paul Ryan and the Democrats and now look what’s happening.

In markets, when there is a sharper need for a thing, the price of that thing goes up.

Importation of labor distorts the market.

When there is a never-ending supply of desperate people willing to pick crops or write disjointed spaghetti code, that functions as a brake on wage growth.

WHY are so many US biz leaders contemptuous of freely operating labor markets..?

Cuz they’re GREEDY and because our immigration laws are insane.

The FIRST thing these people do is send for the aged parents, then sign them up for EVERY benefit in the world.

I read here yesterday that 75% of Americans with STEM degrees work in non-STEM fields. This is directly attributable to H-1Bs. It really is a national scandal and heads should roll over it.

They would rather pick a public fight with the President than hire Americans. Defective American programmer personalities aside, the logic behind such a stance is mind-boggling. They are really saying - loudly and clearly - that they don’t consider IT work critical to the operation of their businesses and don’t want to be forced by the market to pay more than janitorial-level wages for it.

It’s not just in the hiring that the foreigners are favored.
During layoffs, you can lay off Americans cheaper than the H1Bs. Besides severance, they also get a repatriation allowance that includes sending them back and shipping their household items back and sometimes the company even has to buy their homes.
It’s cheaper to lay off an American.

Eff big tech. They’re no friends of the Trump administration anyway. Why should President Trump do them any favors? Maybe the morons should have thought of this before going all in for the Democrats.

Oh well.....they’ll just have to hire Americans at the market price instead of importing ever more cheap labor.

How refreshing.

Seems like only Yesterday I got CLOBBERED on this very same board for speaking out against these.

It was, in fact, 3 to 4 years ago.

I was practically labeled a communist, Isolationist pinko :)

MAYBE in some kind of theory it makes sense, but in reality it is a Freaking Disaster.

I saw an article that something like 2/3s to 3/4s of Google’s or Facebook’s workforce in the US is made up of foreigners.
