A professor emeritus of biology tries to make the case that newborn babies can ethically & morally be killed because they are not “cognizant of themselves” — i.e., they are morally equivalent to a fetus which he maintains is a non-person.

I would propose that this “professor” is not sentient.
So people who are not aware of themselves because they are under anesthesia can be morally and ethically killed?
Or people who are in comas and are not aware of themselves can be killed?
What about when people are sleeping? We can’t know what is going through their minds? Maybe nothing at all, so it’s all good. They can be killed?
What about animals? What sense of self do they have? Can we kill them too?
This professor was born in the wrong decade and the wrong country. He would have made a perfect NAZI.

You mistook that statement. Slaves were human beings and not to be treated as animals or less.
Many Southerners and a heck of a lot Northerners felt slaves were non-beings and on property. That was the point I was making.
