Sorry pundits, you have no clue what will happen Tuesday
Vanity Fair ^ | November 2, 2018 | Peter Hamby

Not only did Northam win the Virginia race, he won by 9 points, a polling error more substantial than anything we saw in 2016. Gillespie, it turns out, actually won more votes than any previous statewide Republican candidate; he had enthusiasm at his back. It’s just that Democrats had more—and they blew the doors off on Election Day. The whole spectacle was yet another blow to polling and to punditry, two industries sullied by Trump’s victory in 2016.

No way do they have anything close to 2008. In 2016 Hillary got 2% fewer votes than Obama did in 2012. Obama was an exceptional candidate, and I mean that in several ways. There was no way Hillary could expect every Obama voter to vote for her, and it is even less likely they will get 2016 type turnout for the midterms, let alone anything resembling 2008. They have nothing to vote for, only fear and hatred of Trump, and that isn’t a motivating force beyond the base. In addition they have no galvanizing candidate to unite them.

Just my opinion of course. On the other hand, Trump has given every reason and worked very hard to get out the GOP vote. And the Dems have given the GOP many reasons to want to stop them. I think the GOP holds the house and expands the Senate by 4-5 seats.

In Virginia, Gillespie lost because a lot of conservative Republican voters did NOT vote for him because he tried to run away from Donald Trump, until in desperation at the end he started saying a few nice things about Trump.

After Gillespie lost, they tried to blame Trump, saying it was disapproval of Trump and his agenda.
No, it was because these RINO candidates did NOT support Trump that Republican Deplorables turned against them and Gillespie.

In this election, there are quite a few Republican RINO incumbents (e.g., Barbara Comstock in Virginia 10th) who are going to lose because they have opposed Trump, not because the voters are angry with Trump and taking it out on Republican candidates.

The Trump-hating Ryan wing of the Republican party are losers, and it will show in this election.

It’s too bad that their lack of support for the duly elected Republican President will meen Democrats are back in power.

“The VA GOP is operated by undocumented Democrats in an R jersey, also known as Bush League Republicans.”

Amen to that.

The Republican establishment in Virginia, rich RINOs who live in gated communities in wealthy Northern Virginia and Richmond’s West End have turned Virginia from a solid red state to a solid and perpetual blue state in less than 10 years.

This isn’t about a wave election, though that is what the Dems continue to say is going to happen. This is about a ground game, volunteer and paid people going door to door to get people to go to the polls. They might want to call it a wave election because that will offer legitimacy to whatever they want to do once in office, but that is not what I’m looking at here. I know active proggies who are afraid that we are going to kill the earth with global warming, and they are pretty motivated, but mostly this is a blue-collar Democratic neighborhood no longer being menaced by drug-dealing gun-toting a-holes who are up all hours and/or who are party animals who let their kids run wild. Things are relatively quiet and these guys are pretty apolitical anyway. If they go to the polls, they are going to vote straight ticket Democratic out of reflex.

In 2016 we only had maybe one or two clipboard wielding people going door to door for Hillary, and you had to chase them down to figure out who they were working for. This is more like the primary battle between Obama and Clinton which got the ball rolling for the turnout in the general. That points to a massive GOTV effort which is not the same thing as a wave election. A wave election is an organic movement of people who are motivated to vote for or against someone and who get themselves to the polls. This is not that. This is a massive ground game. This is paid and unpaid people going door to door.

The RNC had better be on its game in GOP areas because the Dems are not messing around here.

I can't do that: everyone I know is a Barking Moonbat (Minneapolis & Environs)... e.g. my wife saw one of her co-workers reading Mother Jones on a work computer.

And we saw a handful of people on a major street corner with signs for Dean Phillips (i.e. RINO Erik Paulsen is shown in ads, rowing a boat with President Trump in front). I'm surrounded by NPCs. But otherwise, thank you for the clarification: "Nervous Nellies" and "Debbie Downers" can shade into "EEyores" can shade into Trolls.

I don’t know what area you live in. Some areas the DNCC is pouring millions into the fight.
