BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) As the first active-duty military troops sent to the U.S. border with Mexico installed coils of razor wire on a bridge and a riverbank Friday, a sense of unease spread across Texas Rio Grande Valley.
President Donald Trumps portrayal of a border under siege by drug smugglers and other criminals is at odds with what residents in towns along the 1,954-mile (3,126-kilometer) divide with Mexico see in their daily routines, with U.S. border towns consistently ranking among the safest in the country.
Some Valley residents question the need for a large military presence and fear it will tarnish the areas image. And some are afraid of violence if and when the caravan of Central American migrants that the troops have been sent to confront reaches the U.S. border.

Need to visit the Nogales AZ drug runner tunnels. Just next door to Ft Huachuca Army base.
Note that most of those interviewed for opinion bear first and last names quite similar to many of the caravaners.
Troops, razor wire, Media and invaders. All that would make me anxious. Esp the media and invaders.
The whole story is full of editorial comments. FAKE
This azz whole journalist never visited El Paso or Nogales.
LOL! Ya, right! When one thinks of the Rio Grande "Valley" we never think of illegals crossing and confrontations with Border Patrol. I know that I want to visit the Rio Grande Valley and this tarnishes it!!
Boo.Hoo. The drug cartels and human smugglers hate having 10,000 soldiers on the border. It’s bad for business.
Pure BS
I’ve commented on San Diego’s
Border Nausea for 13 yrs.
from first hand experience.

It ain’t No Better,much
Some Valley residents...fear it will tarnish the areas image.Image? The only image I have for the entire border is that it is as porous as Swiss cheese, drug mules have free passage, coyotes bring in illegals by the hundreds or thousands, cartels are shooting into the United States from Mexico, border agents are being murdered, the desert is FILLED with garbage, and ranchers are scared to death when encountering illegals and cartels on their own ranches. How the HELL can that image be any more "tarnished" than it already is?
Besides, who cares if the image is "tarnished"? It's not like the border is a nice tourist destination anyway.
Yeah! We WERE going to take our entire family on a week long vacation trip to the border, but I cancelled those plans after reading this story about a “tarnished image.”
“And some are afraid of violence if and when the caravan of Central American migrants that the troops have been sent to confront reaches the U.S. border.”
uh, yeah. right. I’m sure they’d much rather have thousands of these invaders simply march onto their properties and camp out indefinitely ... this article is nothing but totally fake news from AP ...
Tense for who?? The people trying to sneak into the country ILLEGALLY????
Exactly, the Fake News will look and look for the two anti-Trumpers and ignore thousands who support the President.
The Lying, Dying Fake News Liberal Media - NO Lie They Won’t Tell
it reads like a limp-wristed lia-a-thon by a liberal. I couldnt finish it..
AP really is the king of Fake news.
They dare not compare them with historical crimes rates in the same Rio Grande Valley cities.
