Jewish Americans are flocking to firearms training in the wake of the October 27 attack on Tree of Life Synagogue that killed 11 people.
For example, Haaretz reports that the Cherev Gidon Israeli Tactical Defense Academy near Scranton, Pennsylvania, is witnessing the highest demand for training it has ever seen.
Yonatan Stern, a veteran officer of the Israel Defense Forces and director of the academy, reminds his Scranton, Pennsylvania, classes: The fact is, were at war. We want Jews everywhere to be armed.
Stern indicates that hundreds of people interested in firearms training contacted him during the three days after the Pittsburgh attack. He observed that all but three or four of them were Jewish.
And while there are some members of the Jewish community pushing back against the idea of using guns to keep synagogues safe, Stern notes, To wait for law enforcement to arrive simply is not the answer.
Zev Guttman was afraid of guns until Saturdays attack, but now he chooses to be armed. He said, Everybody has to find a way to react; this is my way.
Brooklyn borough president Eric L. Abrams reacted to the Pittsburgh attack by making clear he will be armed when he goes to a synagogue. He said, Its not popular, but its right. He added, We have to live in the real universe that were in.

I had a pistol and rifle licenses during Dinkins. Pistol was strictly for use on the range and keeping in the house. It was expensive, time-consuming, and took forever. Every time I wanted to buy a new pistol, which I could do only every three months, I would have to apply for permission to purchase, and then take it down to 1 Police Plaza and have the serial number manually typed onto my license. I did it on general principle whenever I could, and every time I left the waiting room at 1 Police, I would say to the last poor soul I passed there, “down with tyranny.” As for a carry permit, not no way, not no how. I’m sure it’s much worse now.
The only way way one can get a pistol permit in the rotten big applle is to say one carries a lot of money or someone is politically connected. I hear the murder rate in Nyew york NewYork is astronomical.
None, to defend themselves they're have to move to one of 39 or 40 shall issue or constitutional states. West coast won't work. Illinois and Florida have good sized Jewish communities, they can move there.
By different culture, I learned to shoot in my upper single digits, over 60 years ago. And while I've no doubt you're capable with one pistol, I am too. Except I'd have to choose which one. I guess that's what I mean by a different culture. It's a sport and a hobby. I doubt the number of weapons is the same as in Texas, the amount you can use at one time, perhaps. I often comment on the absurdity of projecting values over centuries, but not much different across even friendly cultures. The other side, the number of weapons carried openly in Israel, liberals by the tens of thousands would need smelling salts here. That's really not seen much, especially in urban areas.
Yes. Would have given the Reich a reason for the slaughter, rebellion. One percent or so of the population can't do much. Being personally armed, could that save the life of youself and you family by enabling flight. Absolutely. And give pause to the man knocking at your door. And in the Weimer days the Nazis weren't the only armed militias. Heck, todays Antifa was the Communist militia post 1932 when the "official" Communist militia was outlawed. The Nazis simply prevailed.
Sure, he liked knives. I was taught handguns were the same thing, a route to your rifle. Which you should have had in hand
Good news...
I wish them all the best, but it’s not possible to “flock” to firearms training in 3 days. It doesn’t work that way.
Mildly curious as to what pistol that might be ...
Israelis carrying openly are soldiers or reservists, especially the IDF bikini girls as noted. For civilians, it’s like UK, Germany, or France. Right of self defense is almost nonexistent. Why, killing a Muslim who is trying to kill you is automatically a hate crime.
In Israel, it’s been various iterations of the Browning Hi-Power in 9mm, until two years ago they issued me a SIG Sauer P226. As I get out of security in Tel-Aviv, I go to the long term locker and pick it up. I have an older M4 at home in a gun safe. My daughters all got cool micro-Tavors.
In NYC (and NJ), I carry a Smith & Wesson .357, 7 shot, performance series, largely because it was much easier to get a carry license for a revolver.
When in NM, TX, NV, OK, or AZ (where I mainly work), I have purchased a SIG just to be consistent.
Ah. Thanks. I expected the Hi-Power ... it’s also my first (and favorite) pistol.
I’m not sure why they switched to the SIG. It’s a fine weapon, but I don’t like unnecessary change.
It’s about time. I’ve been packing for years. Thank God I live in a State that allows me to.
Until 1933 to be exact. The firtst thing Hitler did was disarm the populace.

“In Israel, its been various iterations of the Browning Hi-Power in 9mm, until...”
Years ago I bought a Hungarian FEG PJK-9HP because it was much cheaper than an FN Browning P-35, but the quality was nearly identical and the pattern was the pre-1973 version. Interchangeable parts, too.
Recently I learned that the Hungarian P-35 was used by Israel though more for police work. Don’t know if it was carried by IDF. Fine pistol of blued steel & wood, none of the plastic fantastic stuff.
