WASHINGTON Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said Sunday that he disagrees with President Donald Trump's call for more armed guards at places of worship in order to prevent shootings like the one that claimed the lives of 11 congregants at a synagogue in the city on Saturday.
Instead, Peduto told NBC's "Meet the Press," he believes that gun control measures would go further to help stop these shootings.
"I belong to an organization, a bipartisan organization, called Mayors Against Illegal Guns. I don't think that the answer to this problem is solved by having our synagogues, mosques and churches filled with armed guards or schools filled with armed guards," Peduto said.

The same fools who say it is impossible to identify and deport 12 million illegal aliens, believe they can locate and confiscate 310 million “guns” in the USA.
Analogy: Having lots of Money isn’t the answer, but it sure doe help!
I bet the mayor has armed guards. Get rid of yours first before spewing this cr9p.
Not filled with armed guards, but filled with armed citizens is what I Think Trump actually wants. Our demented culture has become worse in many ways than the wild west ever was, where many men would think it derelict to not carry a gun.
Seems he’s an expert in what’s not ‘the answer,’ but has no clue what is the answer. Do all Pittsburghers join hands and sing kumbaya or something? That’ll work—NOT!
Peduto is a gun grabbing ahole.
Also, after all the threats from muslims in recent years against synagogues.... even though this shooter nutjob was not a muslim.....I’m surprised that any synagogue, especially in a major city, has no armed security.
So he’s saying Israel shouldn’t have guards on their borders?
Um... Synagogues in NYC have armed guards AND the NYPD.
But yup, the don’t work.
Armed Security WOULD have stopped it cold.
Case closed.
Pittsburgh Mayor, a Democrat, would rather Citizens be killed than be able to fight back and protect themselves.
Sounds like another Democrat who needs to be made unemployed ASAP.
Armed personnel in Christian churches is now virtually an unspoken rule and for good reason. I know several in deep blue Massachusetts also have eyes on the parking lot and all doors during service.
It should be standard for ANY conservative gathering. I cannot stress this enough. Do not ask for permission. If law enforcement is there, tell them ‘we got our own line of defense to compliment yours.’ No further details needed. If they have a problem with that, then having there is probably worthless.
Is there a “D” behind the name Mayor Bill Peduto?
If yes, do the opposite of what he says.
So the mayor is complicit then.
There are a number of members of our church that carry, myself included. One member is a State Police Officer and we regularly train together as a group and have individuals strategically placed each Sunday. We’re well prepared.
And the State Police Officer always seems to have plenty of ammo to pass around when we go to the range. ;)
Of course it is the answer. The only reason Congressman Scalise was the only one shot and there were not 11 casualties that day, was there were armed police assigned for protection, and on the scene.
They shot the assailant and ended the violence.
Learn from that experience.
I wonder if there's an anti-gun version of the "NPC" meme? If not, there should be - it would fit perfectly.
In our synagogue during one of the high holy days our synagogue felt threatened. We showed up and there were these strangers at all the doors. They did not have firearms that were visible, but we knew that they had them and guess what, they did work.
During the service a women sitting next to my wife mentioned that she did really feel safer with these armed guards nearby, and my wife answered her. “I would feel safer if I were packing too.”
Strangely, the women did not say another word to us.
Gun rights for ‘all honest citizens’
Increasing security for Brazilian citizens has been one of Mr Bolsonaro’s flagship campaign issues. He has portrayed himself as a hardliner who will restore safety to Brazil’s streets.
He has indicated that his government will aim to relax laws restricting the ownership and carrying of guns. “Every honest citizen, man or woman, if they want to have a weapon in their homes - depending on certain criteria - should be able to have one,” he said of his plans on Rede TV on 11 October.
