Don’t Believe the Saudi Lies
National Review ^ | October 21, 2018

Posted on 10/21/2018 2:26:16 PM PDT by reaganaut1

Nineteen days after Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, the Saudi regime has at last acknowledged the obvious, that Khashoggi is dead. After first insisting that he had left the consulate of his own accord despite video evidence to the contrary, and then slamming the allegations of his murder as “baseless” and threatening oil sanctions against those claiming otherwise, the kingdom has finally settled on its official story: Khashoggi was inadvertently killed inside the consulate during a fistfight that just happened to break out in the midst of an otherwise standard meeting with Saudi intelligence officials. The regime has made a show of dismissing and arresting several officials it says were rogues, and attributes responsibility for the killing to them only.

As alibis go, this barely qualifies. It is a wildly implausible story clearly designed to absolve Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman of responsibility of the murder and therefore leave open the way for continued close relations with the United States. President Trump and Secretary of State Pompeo seem inclined to suspend disbelief, which would be a serious mistake. The situation demands a tougher, less credulous approach.

The Saudi explanation has changed enough times to give the impression that the kingdom was trying on different hats to see which might fit. There is convincing evidence that Khashoggi’s killing was the result of a premeditated operation carried out with bin Salman’s support. Turkish intelligence has alluded to a recording of the killing not released to the public, but thanks to video surveillance, the world knows for certain that a group of Saudi musclemen flew into Istanbul and entered the consulate hours before Khashoggi arrived.

Re: “The Saudis were not truthful to our President and embarrassed him by doing so. They should pay a price for that fact alone.”

I’m embarrassed that President Trump actually believes anything the Muslim dictators of Turkey and Saudi Arabia have to say.

The only price I’m worried about is the price of oil.

Beyond that, and the security of Israel, I don’t care what barbarian Muslims do to each other.

[I agree. I originally supported the Iraq war because I believed the Iraqis were an ancient and cultured people and only needed the opportunity that freedom would offer in order to excel.

I’ve never been more wrong about anything in my life and regret that thinking to this day.]

They are ancient and cultured. But antiquity and culture don’t put food on the table. Invaders of antiquity slaughtered segments of the conquered not simply because of bloodlust. They did it to overawe the population - to convince them that any displays of resistance that involved the deaths of occupying soldiers would result in the extermination of entire clans or villages.

The Shock and Awe campaign was BS. You don’t shock and awe people by putting on fireworks displays. You do it by killing one insurgent and everyone he knows, down to the last man, woman and child. If you’re not prepared to do that, you will bleed for decades. Both communist and anti-communist governments suppressed revolts using fairly similar techniques. The communists were more successful because they were generally more brutal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_killings_of_landlords_under_Mao_Zedong The one anti-Communist regime that completely destroyed its communist movement in one fell swoop used very similar tactics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_mass_killings_of_1965%E2%80%9366

The Nazis accomplished shock and awe at Lidice by killing thousands in retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lidice_massacre But it wasn’t unique to them - Jews are a diaspora today because of a large-scale massacre inflicted by their Roman rulers in the aftermath of the Bar Kochba rebellion, as well as their expulsion from Jerusalem. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_Kokhba_revolt#Aftermath

This guy was a Muslim Brotherhood goon working part-time for the Washington Post as a faux legitimate cover. He is a hard core Muslim with ties to terrorists. He is a citizen of Saudi Arabia and is subject to those laws.

His death is most likely a “win.”

Why did President Reagan send weapons to Iran if we were at war with them?

Real politic. We helped the Iraqis when they were losing then helped the Iranians when they were losing. Goals was to keep the two sides killing each other as long as possible so they could not make trouble for us in the region.

Come on National Review. You and CNN need to embed some reporters over in Saudi Arabia to get to the bottom of this. Consulates in Turkey, Yemen and elsewhere would be good too. I suggest they send their “best” most liberal reporters to cover this important story.
