An invasive insect species native to China, India and Vietnam is posing a problem in at least two states.... 'The Spotted Lanternfly' is harming crops in Winchester, Virginia, WDVM reported. The Pennsylvania-based Churchville Nature Center said the creatures were also spotted for the first time on its property Thursday.
"If it is new to you, this invasive plant hopper is threatening the forests of the northeast as well as the lumber and agricultural industries. Please keep an eye out for the insect."
The species poses a threat to agriculture and has the ability to greatly impact the grape, hops and logging industries, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture warned.
The insect causes damage to plants because of its method of feeding, the rapid buildup of large populations and the production of honeydew, a by-product of their feeding activity that serves as a medium for fungal growth. [Spotted lanternfly] can also be a nuisance pest to homeowners when found in large numbers, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said in a statement when the species was first detected in the state in February.

We need to bring back DDT. The airheads that support the banning of this pesticide for environmental reasons, need to take a long hard look at what is happening to the environment without it!
One word: DDT.
That’s exactly right.....we’ll have increase in diseases with people getting here as already happened.
We didn’t have one in our first house. For 19 years. No dishwasher, either. We have wonderful memories, though.
Vineyards are big in Bucks Co. This is heartbreaking.
Asians have no real great love for our country unless actually born and raised here. Otherwise their culture’s attitude about US citizens here is widely known. Takee-takee is the agenda 24/7.
Which is why all stated is a national security issue.
Some nasty introduced critter is giving lethal yellowing disease to our citrus. Wiped out many people’s orchards, including mine.
So now I grow blueberries and loquats - at least until some idiot introduces a pest that attacks them.
Wait a minute, china Feinstein. How long has this stuff been here? Making deals, eh?

For the last 40 years, no politician in America has arguably maintained a deeper, more longstanding and friendlier relationship with China, at the highest levels of its ruling Communist Party, than Feinstein. It dates back to the opening of U.S.-Chinese diplomatic relations in 1979.
Don’t put ANYTHING past them. They are as evil as weevils.
You’re not thinking of big bluestem or little bluestem are you? It’s orange and stands through the winter, very pretty in large stands and good forage for grazers. Both types are actually native mainstays of the old tallgrass prairies.
I didn’t read the article, but how far would I have to go before this gets blamed on global warming?
I’ve never owned a home, but did live in two places that had wood burning fireplaces...and I, and my cats enjoyed them profusely. The oldest cat was black, and he laid by the fire all the time. And for Christmas one year, I found a Victorian designed Christmas card that depicted a black cat curled up in front of a fireplace, and sent one to all my friends. Sadly the cat has been gone many years now, but I still kept a few of those cards in memory.
Those dogs look like baking French bread, golden brown and split down the back like that, lol.
ROTFL the bugs must have heard me rant. I knew I was forgetting one other...roaches. As I walked out my back door a 2.5 inch roach looking monster fell off the top of the door right in front of my face!
It’s dead, Jim.
Cats love the heat too! :)
The four stages are, clockwise from upper left: Young nymph, older nymph, adult and molting nymph to adult stage.
