Insects invading Virginia and Pennsylvania could be 'most destructive species in 150 years'...

An invasive insect species native to China, India and Vietnam is posing a problem in at least two states.... 'The Spotted Lanternfly' is harming crops in Winchester, Virginia, WDVM reported. The Pennsylvania-based Churchville Nature Center said the creatures were also spotted for the first time on its property Thursday.

"If it is new to you, this invasive plant hopper is threatening the forests of the northeast as well as the lumber and agricultural industries. Please keep an eye out for the insect."

The species poses a threat to agriculture and “has the ability to greatly impact the grape, hops and logging industries,” the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture warned.

“The insect causes damage to plants because of its method of feeding, the rapid buildup of large populations and the production of honeydew, a by-product of their feeding activity that serves as a medium for fungal growth. [Spotted lanternfly] can also be a nuisance pest to homeowners when found in large numbers,” the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said in a statement when the species was first detected in the state in February.

"Oy! Thank goodness we often get temps below zero here in MA."

Same here in central NY State. We've been having nights in the 30's.

I know they are destructive but they are a pretty bug. They are just as pretty dead as they are alive though.

We had to bring in a bunch of plants this week that we never got to this season. There must be five or six of them that I’m going to have to baby through the winter. Two bananas, three hibiscus, a hydrangea and I guess that’s it. After hurricane Michael, I’m just as glad to live this far north.

Why don’t we ever have GOOD bugs from Asia? Ever hear of any? Do these bugs eat the KUDZU? I HATE THAT PLANT. How about our deep state genetic engineers do a little hoky-poky and make it like Kudz.

How about the tall weird looking grass weed that I never remember seeing as a kid. It’s everywhere. First saw it in Missouri, then PA, then NC (my travels). I hate that crap too. Stands brown all winter. grrrr.

It’s a plague. Why isn’t China plagued?

I b*tch every year about having to scrape my car windows of ice, and brush the snow off my car, but I stay here in Rome, NY because it's cheap to live. When I want to escape, I visit my oldest son in Troy, NY, or my youngest son in Indiana.

Cold weather doesn’t stop these things. They are laying their eggs now, they only live one year. They like maples. The bugs are black with white spots and they can jump. Folks are simply not doing enough to stop these things. Local wineries are getting hit hard.

In PA here I haven’t seen any but glad to know about these now.

The article states lanternfly eggs can be killed with alcohol or hand sanitizer.

Winters are tough. Thank goodness for a wood-burning fireplace. It's not only warm, it's cheerful.

Yes, my husband just had to see that. Every year for the 32 years I've known him he has tried to convince me to get a fake Christmas tree. Now he has a new weapon, drat.

LOL. My mom could always spot those, too. My sister lives in Churchville. Beautiful nature center. Oh no! I just remembered one of my favorite trees is in a grove near there. sigh.

Yep here too.....they traveled to my place from a hour away where I had visited a family who had traps set for them. Could’t believe it when I spotted a stink bug ‘INSIDE’!
