Apple's Tim Cook demands Chinese spy chip story to be retracted by Bloomberg

Apple CEO Tim Cook has upped the ante in its denial of an investigative report claiming a Chinese spy chip was embedded into the tech giant's servers, telling BuzzFeed News that Bloomberg must retract the story--"This did not happen. There's no truth to this."

"I was involved in our response to this story from the beginning," Cook said according to Buzzfeed. "I personally talked to the Bloomberg reporters along with Bruce Sewell who was then our general counsel. We were very clear with them that this did not happen, and answered all their questions. ... Each time they brought this up to us, the story changed and each time we investigated we found nothing."

Seems Apple is pretty forcefully, denying that. But then Bloomberg said:

Bloomberg issued a statement to Buzzfeed, saying it stands by its reporting, which included spending more than a year on the story and more than 100 interviews. “Seventeen individual sources, including government officials and insiders at the companies, confirmed the manipulation of hardware and other elements of the attacks," the spokesman told the news organization. "We also published three companies’ full statements, as well as a statement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We stand by our story and are confident in our reporting and sources.

Still not clear, who is telling the truth here...

And who to trust?

Apple, which is outsourcing so many jobs to China?

Or Bloomberg, which is run by … Bloomberg.

Decisions, decisions.

It’s spy stuff. You can’t trust any of them- or anyone else.

Kinda funny to hear someone ask for a story to be pulled in an age where Fake News is celebrated.

Where is SuperMicro on this? They are a Taiwan-based company that was responsible for the manufacture of the servers. They have a LOT more to lose. I once owned a Supermicro motherboard, in part because they weren’t made in Red China in the 90s. (For the record, dual Pentium II 400Mhz with 256mb DIMMs and AGP 2x, plus a PCI modem card, 68 pin SCSI internal HDs.

Nothing to see here, right or wrong, Cook is simply covering his ass. Oops, wrong word—or the right one?

Fake news. Apple has not outsourced any jobs to China. Their only employees there are salespeople at Apple stores in China. This fake crap keeps coming up, and nothing is said about other companies who actually build factories in China and directly employ Chinese manufacturers.

Tim Cook to self: “Humm, how can I get tons of free publicity like I did when I refused to help crack Syed Farook’s (the San Bernadino terrorist) cell phone...?”

You are right, of course.

My misstatement.

Apple sells phones which are made in China, by Foxconn (I believe)

You are right. Apple does not actually make anything.

They just collect billions of dollars.

:D

That was a scary article, but someone should have come forward by now with a Supermicro motherboard with an installed spy chip. Has that happened?

Super Micro Computer, Inc, doing business as Supermicro, is a Taiwanese-American founded information technology company based in San Jose, California. Wikipedia

At the time of my purchase, I recall manufacturing being done in Taiwan.

They already are using chips made in America, it's just that you aren't looking, as usual. Last time I was in Austin, I noticed a chip plant there that supplies chips to Apple. By the way, Austin is in Texas. Other chips supplied to Apple by Texas Instruments, Fairchild and Maxim Integrated in the United States. Other companies also supplying components to Apple made in the USA and around the world outside China. As well as many American companies supplying components to Apple although those companies may outsource outside the USA.

You're just focusing on trying to make Apple look bad while ignoring other American companies that actually don't use American made components.
