The San Antonio City Council approved a $450 million redevelopment plan for the Alamo, marking a new chapter for the nearly 300-year-old site. The council voted for the proposal on Thursday, signing off on disputed changes, including moving the 1930s Cenotaph memorial, the San Antonio Express-News reported. The vote comes after months of debate by city officials and residents over elements of the redevelopment plan, such as closing streets to vehicle traffic, moving the Cenotaph, and using fences or barriers to control public access. The council approved a 50-year lease that gives the Texas General Land Office management and control of the plaza. Other changes include building a museum.

I'm voting straight GOP at the mid-terms except one Independent vote against P Bush.
Awesome! They can finally refinish the basement.
DITTO!
I would've thought San Antonio would be more likely to tear it down than to redevelop it.
I figured the liberals would bulldoze the site and put in a minimall.
You beat me to it.
When I went there with little Flash A and Little Flash B about five years ago the basement was apparently closed to the public.
It’s the site of a famous Mexican victory.
Why tear it down when you can build a security fence around it to keep people away, and put up a museum that explains how the Texans stole the land from Mexico and were actually criminals?
Me too. Alamo Plaza is a very unique place. Years ago before the Riverwalk hotels got so expensive I could go to SA for conventions or training leave the hotel with a cup of coffee and sit in Alamo Plaza at 6 AM and think about the battle that was fought where I was sitting.
“Remember the Alamo!”
Not really. Their defeat, and the loss of Texas a few weeks later was created at the Alamo.
Thank you for not voting for Bush.
450 million? For that kind of money you would think that they were relocating the entire Alamo and putting a giant dome over it. A lot of well-connected snakes are going to be making a lot of money through graft.
I've taken so many people from out of town down there (I live on the North side). It's totally bewildering to stand there while they look at the Chapel door and sigh, “just think it all happened here.” I almost feel guilty to tell them, “actually almost nothing happened here, but see that building with the silly museum, and that building over there that used to be a Post Office, that's where it all happened.”
I don't mind them changing the site to something more realistic, I just wish I had more confidence in the people in charge of doing it!
,,,and Everyone wants to know
about the Basement!
The Alamo brings in too many tourist dollars for anyone to ever tear down.
Headline is wrong, San Antonio did not approve this, our city council did over our vocal objections.
Water slide and zip lines.
What more could want?
