BOSTONHarvard Universitys longtime admissions dean defended the schools recruitment of prospective students in the first day of a landmark trial accusing Harvard of discriminating against Asian-American applicants.
On Monday, lawyers for the plaintiffs focused on internal documents showing Harvard sends targeted letters to high-school students who score well on the PSAT, encouraging them to consider applying to the prestigious school. The score thresholds vary by race.
In a recent admissions year, white students in 20 underrepresented stateswhich Harvard calls sparse countryreceived a recruitment letter if they scored 1310 or higher out of a possible 1600 on the combined verbal and math components, according to the plaintiffs exhibit. In all U.S. states, Asian-American women had to score at least 1350 to receive a letter, while Asian-American men had to score at least 1380.
The PSAT is considered a preview of how a student may score on the SAT.
Black, Hispanic and Native American high-schoolers nationally who scored at least 1100 received a letter, the plaintiffs exhibit showed.
Students who qualify for these letters are twice as likely to be admitted as students who dont qualify, according to a handbook provided to Harvards alumni interviewers.
William Fitzsimmons, Harvards admissions dean since 1986, defended the policy by saying the letters to white students in more rural states help the school recruit from areas where students may be less aware of Harvard. We do everything we can to reach out to a much broader range of people, he testified.
Mr. Fitzsimmons, 74 years old, said the lower thresholds for underrepresented minorities take into consideration how the rather stark economic differences and opportunities those students face may affect their ability to score higher on standardized tests.

I don’t get Harvard. It isn’t what it once was, so why send your kids there? Conservatives should refuse to send their children there and opt for cheaper and better. That is the easiest way to bring Harvard down— when it becomes a leftist university without conservative rhetoric.
Not even the best in the state of Georgia
Not often you can support racist behavior, quantitatively. Harvard is also prejudice. I guess Asian Americans all come from affluent families and live in swanky neighborhoods. Oh, they are also good in math.
Harvard was caught and now they are trying to spin it.
I think the North Avenue Trade School in Midtown Atlanta would disagree.
According to Harvard 1/1024 makes you an American Indian.
Doctors and Lawyers seem to hold it high regard. Next is Wall Street and then high paying non profits. Throw in expensive business consulting companies like Booze Allen and Mckinsey. Federal government agencies like the State Department like to recruit at Harvard.
I know a very conservative person who is a leadership position with the Republican party. His daughter is attending Harvard. He doesn’t seem to have a problem with Harvard.
“n short, you have NO RIGHT to be treated equally outside of the government. You have no more right to be accepted to Harvard than you have the right to trespass on someones property.”
Well, if you are Hillsdale College, maybe. Because it accepts no federal money and does not let its students get federal financial aid.
But if a school accepts federal money or participates in the student loan business, it has, by contract and statute, subjected itself to non-discrimination laws.
Harvard sucks up that money like a giant vacuum.
I am sure Georgia Tech was meant.
They don’t call MIT the “Georgia Tech of the North” for nothing.
Does U G A even have an engineering program?
Only to support the Cow Farming, and, football programs.
Federal case law has decided that if a university takes federal funds, federal rules about many things apply. Hence Title IX.
I personally am fine with letting private institutions be free to let whoever they want in. But the law currently says otherwise.
Did you know if you make less than $150,000 per year, your kid goes to Harvard free?
Georgia has become among the top engineering schools in the country, after MIT, and Cal Tech. I didn’t realize it until my nephew was applying to engineering schools, and it was one of his top choices. He got into several top 5 schools, but not Georgia. I would have never guessed.
If you’re White or Asian you need to score in the 90th percentile on the SAT to be considered for admission.
If you’re African American, Latino, or Native American, you need to score in the 60th percentile to get the same consideration.
I did not. But if they come out of Harvard as a liberal tool, what is gained?
Dunno... maybe agricultural engineering or keg party engineering.
