President Donald Trump has said the US will inflict "severe punishment" on Saudi Arabia if the kingdom is found to be responsible for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
He said he would be "very upset and angry if that were the case", but ruled out halting big military contracts.
Mr. Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, vanished on October 2 after visiting its consulate in Istanbul...

I think the deeper truth than “tribal loyalties”, the moral truth, is that Saudi Arabia is a totalitarian society that the USA and other countries are dependent on for $$$$ because we have spent money we don’t have and are massively in debt.
I don’t really promote the WAPO but do you really think WAPO contributors should be taken out Mafia style and chopped into little pieces.
The “disinformation service” of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is certainly at work out there today.
The lamestreams want to rub Trump’s nose in this incident. I actually heard one of their naboobs going on about how “the president MUST quit doing business with the Saudis”; so this will be the mantra of the upcoming week — the attempt to lead the President about by the nose. They want him on defense.
What is most likely happening as I write: US emissaries are w/ Saudi counterparts trying to decide on a “briar-patch punishment” that will look good to everyone. I.e., do something to them that they wanted done anyway.
I agree with those on this thread who have given voice to the realpolitik here: the new iteration of the royal family over there are the good guys.
LOL!
The twitter guys are way ahead on this, can’t live in the past when it comes to Saudi Arabia. The paradigm has shifted.
Trump says he’s concerned about the matter and will do something about.
I hope he does.
It really disturbed me to see that video of him in May 2017 doing the sword dance with the Saudi royals when he visited SA.
And read the post I linked to earlier about the money relationship with the Saudis.
The truth hurts, but its there.

The problem is your shameless blogpimping.
No way you read and truly thought about that in the three minutes between my post and your reply.
Good replies to consider on the threads too.

You have to read the Patrick Poole thread too.
Funny how the BBC headline doesn’t match the first sentence of the BBC article.
Punish them by subsidizing them at a slightly lower level? Cut their allowance? I guess that would be a start.
Opinions vary. Thanks for being nice about it, and providing your rationale.
The Turks say they have audio and video evidence of Khashoggi’s murder.
...
How would they have that?
Even the CCTV footage at the article could be manipulated.
Whatever happened to Khashoggi, he was or still is an enemy of Western civilization.
I don’t care if Muslim Brotherhood guys get taken out and cut up. The fact he was also a WaPo contributor is irrelevant. Being a WaPo contributor doesn’t somehow make up for being an islamic terrorist supporter in my view. I don’t have a lot of good to say about Saudis but I don’t see taking out any member of a known islamic terror organization as a bad thing.
We must be very skeptical of any claims by Turkey’s government.
The US has a major presence in the Kingdom, both militarily and economically. The Saudis have committed to purchasing over $100 billion in US military equipment. We have a huge training mission in the Kingdom as well as a significant intelligence operation. The Saudis have worked with Israel to combat the Iranians. They have proven very helpful to the US in many areas unknown to the public.
Turkey is not our friend. Erdogan has been moving Turkey more into the Islamic orbit and away from the many reforms of Ataturk that made Turkey a westernized country. The Turkish parliament prevented the 4th ID from transiting Turkey during the Iraq invasion. Turkey is buying Russian weapons. Erdogan is a tyrant and a friend of the MB. Remember the Turkish bodyguard goons beating up demonstrators in DC.
The Turks hate the Saudis for a number of reasons. And now we have Congress piling on Saudi Arabia trying to force Trump into taking precipitant actions that could damage our bilateral relations. It reminds me of Carter's human rights policies that led to the undermining of the Shah. Our national interests need to come first ahead of some concerns about a WP reporter (non-US citizen) who has his own set of problems.
I don't trust the Turks and Erdogan. Trump should be very wary.
Saudi Arabia is being framed.
MbS is not a Saudi leader from the past and today’s Saudi Arabia is not the Saudi Arabia of the past. The paradigm has shifted.
If anyone wants to know more about what’s behind this story read the links in posts 21 and 29.
BS. The theocratic tyranny is Iran. Two of the three holiest sites in Islam are in the Kingdom. Hence, the title of the King is Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. Yes, Saudi Arabia is a monarchy ruled by a powerful leader. It is not a theocracy.
I lived in the Kingdom for five years, including during the Gulf War. There are plenty of problems in Saudi Arabia, but the alternatives to the Royal Family are not good for American interests in the region. Carter got rid of the Shah and we are paying the price to this very day.
The propaganda line is that Iran, Saudi Arabias Shia Islam rival is evil, evil, evil.
I also lived in Iran for two years including during the fall of the Shah. Iran is the biggest state sponsor of terrorism. They have killed Americans in Saudi Arabia (Khobar Tower bombing), Iraq, Lebanon, and elsewhere. Iran is evil. The only solution is regime change.
For once I agree - but because the content of the article is crap. It’s visiting Saudi Arabia at an address they don’t live at anymore.
