A Harnett County high school principal has been replaced, a week after she asked a high school student to remove a jersey that bore President Donald Trumps name on the back.
The Harnett school system on Friday announced a new principal for Harnett Central High School. The district said the change is directly related to the actions taken by former Harnett Central Principal Cindy Gordon last week in asking the student not to wear the Trump shirt.
The district announced leadership changes at several of its schools, including Harnett Central, on Friday afternoon. The changes are effective immediately, according to the district news release.
The high school had encouraged students to dress with a patriotic theme for the football game on Oct. 5, ABC11 reported.
Harnett Central parent Mike Collins told the news station that the high schools principal asked his 18-year-old son to remove the jersey because it was too political for some at the football game. The red, white and blue jersey featured USA and the Statue of Libertys torch on the front, with Trump and the number 45 on the back.
Catherine Jones, the current principal at Harnett Primary School, will be the new principal at Harnett Central High. Calvetta Dunkins, an assistant principal at Dunn Middle School, will be the interim principal at Harnett Primary.
The news release did not mention Gordons name nor say whether she is now employed by the school system.
Again, we want to emphasize that Harnett County Schools supports and affirms students rights to express themselves including wearing clothing expressing political messages or supporting political candidates or officeholders in ways that are not expected to disrupt school or school events, the district news release said.
Tony Buzzard, an attorney representing the Collins family, told The News & Observer, Were very pleased that the school board and the county were quick to resolve the issue.
Buzzard said the family wanted the board to recognize what had happened.
Asked whether the family might consider any further action, Buzzard said hes not sure. But he said Fridays announcement will influence their decisions moving forward.
Good point.
This is an amazing story...
Someone in a public school actually held accountable for violating the first amendment rights of a student.
Nice.
:) CLARITY :)
It's no Powers Boothe, but the best i can do
Hopefully, some local parent or Freeper will find out her current status and will post it for all of us.
Double-barreled lawsuit potential that’s why they acted. First Amendment rights yeah I guess so. But the eight hundred pound elephant in the room nobody’s talking about is the fact the kid is African-American. This story wouldn’t even have been reported if the kid had been a white boy. And the principal would still have her job. You can take that one to the bank.
No where in the article does it even mention the city or the state where this occurred.
It could have happened in Timbuktu, for all we know.
Theres hope for this country.
She sure went quick, I’ll say that but no one on earth could have gotten me or anyone I knew to take off the damn shirt, aside from, perhaps, a parent. No teacher, no principal, no cop NOBODY.
One less Stalinist in the school system.
Great name!
Yep - hope for North Carolina too...
They did a good job of hiding that. So you have a link to where you learned that? I'm curious how they presented it.
The dad is a democrat. Hmm. Walk (or run) away maybe?
Concurring bump...well said
I noticed that too!
Its in North Carolina
Exactly. Even though she’s in a less powerful position, a statement has been made by the school, and there’s a lot to be said for that.
Not many months ago her decision would’ve been supported by the Board, and parents would’ve had to take it to court. This time they acted quickly, and the statement they made was good.
Where did you read the kid is black? Just saw the father Mike Collins on WRAL, and he is white.
The Democrats are becoming more and more deranged and unhinged by the minute.
Only thing better would be Buford Buzzard.
Making America Great, Again.
Not tired of WINNING Yet.
