Allegheny County Democratic leader resigns over accusations of 'insensitive' Facebook posts
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | October 10, 2018 | Bob Bauder

The executive director of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee abruptly resigned after drawing fire from committee members for what they described as racially insensitive messages that he and his wife allegedly posted on Facebook.

Mark Salvas, 47, of Plum, whom the committee hired in September, resigned on Tuesday, according to committee Solicitor Jim Burn.

Burn said the committee is searching for a replacement, but he declined further comment. Eileen Kelly, who chairs the committee, could not be reached Wednesday.

Salvas did not return a call seeking comment.

“We have a zero tolerance for sexual harassment or racism of any kind,” said state Democratic Committee Chairwoman Nancy Mills. “I think Chairwoman Kelly made the right decision once she was aware of the issues.”

The controversy centers on Facebook posts allegedly made by Salvas and his wife, Cindy DeZort-Salvas, in July and September.

“I’m not sure how to comprehend what he has up there, but it’s insensitive to African Americans,” said state Rep. Ed Gainey, D-Lincoln-Lemington, a committee member. “The action was wrong. The action was insensitive, and for that he had to go. African Americans are the backbone of the Democratic Party, and you can’t have someone at the head of your party not understanding the backbone of the party.”

One of the posts in question showed Salvas and his wife with the message, “I stand for the flag. I kneel at the cross,” apparently a reference to NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, according to a screenshot of the post found on Facebook by the Tribune-Review.

Well, I guess the Democrats are starting to get the idea in some places.

Probably better career opportunities as a Republican executive director.

(Don't look now, but Trump is making major inroads into that Democrat party backbone.)

"Why was this guy ever a Democrat?"

Having grown up in Western PA, my guess would be that he grew up in a union household and was indoctrinated since birth. It's an odd phenomenon. In Pittsburgh and many of the small surrounding towns that used to be heavy coal and steel, you'll find lots of otherwise conservative people, gun owners, hunters, regular church-goers, who grew up in union households and would never dare vote republican. That started to change a little under Reagan, but to this day it's not hard to find people like that.

Trump targeted blue-collar voters in 2016, and working-class people will continue to be a major focus of his.

Meanwhile, white heterosexuals are seeing they are increasingly unwelcome in the Democrat Party.

...described as racially insensitive messages

I didn't realize that Democrats were cracking down on racially insensitive messages. I guess there won't be any more anti-white rhetoric.

Bill Clinton won 49 percent of the white vote on 1996
Al Gore won 43 percent in 2000
John Kerry won 41 percent in 2004
Barack Obama won 43 percent in 2008 and 39 percent in 2012
Hillary Clinton won 39 percent in 2016

Also, let's not forget the racially insensitive remarks if any black person supports the Republic Party. If Donald Trump can win the hearts and minds of blacks that would have otherwise voted Democrat, then he should win in a landslide in 2020.

Having also grown up in Western PA and still living here, I want to emphasize your point to others. I read once that we have the second highest NRA membership rate (next to Texas) and as you know even local Democrats can still be found here that are pro life. It's only when they get into national politics that they are forced to change their stance. For these reasons, I have great hope that PA will continue to be a purple and redder state. These are some of the most conservative social people in the country.

You nailed it. I lived there for the first half of my life. I never realized I wasn’t a Democrat until I moved away, and Reagan was elected.

“I’m not sure how to comprehend what he has up there, but it’s insensitive to African Americans,” said state Rep. Ed Gainey, D-Lincoln-Lemington, a committee member. “

Lincoln-Lemington is a neighborhood that has almost nightly gun battles, usually resulting in deaths, quite often those of children.

And this guy is worked-up over what some white dude posted on Facebook??

Lots of Western PA Democrats are culturally conservative, but register and vote Democrat because.....well, Grandma and Grandpa did.

"They're the party of the Workin' Man! Republicans only care about the Robber Barons!" That's been beaten into peoples' brains around here since the Homestead Strike.

Lots of others register Democrat because the only real choice you have at the ballot box most often is in the Democrat Primary. The GOP is so weak around here they don't even bother to field candidates for a lot of offices.

You can feel the tension building however as Mayor Bill Peduto imports swarms of Millenial techies with their San Francisco values. That's not sitting well at all with the old-school Yinzer Millhunk Democrats.

So, now all blacks must hate the US. According to Democrats, all blacks must think the same way, or they are not “authentic”.
