Donald Trump Endorses Prison Reform; Jeff Sessions ‘Overruled’
Breitbart ^ | 11 Oct 2018 | Charlie Spiering

President Donald Trump endorsed prison reform on Thursday, warning Attorney General Jeff Sessions to get on board with the idea. Trump said he is interested in reducing sentences for people like Alice Marie Johnson, a nonviolent drug offender whose life sentence the president commuted in June.

“There has to be a reform because it’s very unfair right now,” Trump said. “It’s very unfair to African Americans. It’s unfair to everybody. And it’s also very costly,” the president commented on Thursday morning in a phone interview with Fox & Friends.

Trump plans to meet with hip-hop superstar Kanye West at the White House on Thursday to discuss prison reform and other issues important to the black community.

Trump questioned some of the life sentences for nonviolent drug offenders but said he would continue to be tough on crime in other ways. He noted that West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, was also pushing for prison reform.

Fox News host Brian Kilmeade asked Trump for a response to Jeff Sessions, who opposed prison reform.

tell ya what; I bet I can help you to answer your own question. if a president not named trump . . . say, some guy named obama, was proposing prison reform because it’s unfair to minorities and costs too much, what would you be doing right now.

see?

they have to get the money to pay somewhere, and this runs into a lot of money.

It runs into a lot of money because drug criminalization restricts the market to criminals. Alkies don't apparently do a lot of stealing to feed their habit, because their drug is legal thus relatively cheap.

oh, I see. the libertarians are here. they only seem to wake up around election time to see how many votes they can draw from conservative candidates, and send liberals to congress.

anyway, the idea of a free society, one that enables it's citizens to do pretty much as they please, that has also long since lost it's moral bearings, necessarily requires a relatively large prison population.

Actually, I'd be doing the same. I think there are people with bad sentences. Obama, if I recall correctly, wanted equal attention to crack and powder cocaine. Seems fair and appropriate. What I'd object to with both is commuting terrorists, cop killers, violent felons.

I think the change, and I have been on FR since 2008, is that people can look at the policies and not so much knee-jerk responses. There are still too many of those and I, like many others, simply agree to disagree.

perhaps you would like to spend some time in prison with all of those unfairly incarcerated fellows doing meaningful research into this social injustice.

we could publish your findings. posthumously, of course.

That was an interesting moment in this morning’s interview - the tone in Trump’s voice when asked about Sessions was one of contempt.

President Trump's hands have been tied on those issues by the courts.

In the meantime he has been re-fashioning the courts bigly. It's going to be a massively productive second term.
