Fresh off Kavanaugh win, Republicans aim to confirm more than 40 judges before midterms

With the Supreme Court nomination of Brett M. Kavanaugh completed, GOP senators are quickly pivoting to filling out the rest of the federal courts, eyeing more than 40 district and circuit judges they want to confirm before the end of the year.

One top priority is filling the seat left vacant on the powerful D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals when Justice Kavanaugh was elevated.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley, Republicans’ point man on the issue, said if the White House can nominate someone this week, lawmakers could have Justice Kavanaugh’s replacement seated by Christmas.

That would be in addition to 38 district judges and three circuit judges already pending on the Senate floor, who Republicans say they should confirm before they leave Washington to campaign for the mid-term elections.

“McConnell ought to keep the Senate in session until we get all 41 of those judges done,” Mr. Grassley told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt Wednesday.

The Judiciary Committee could add nine judges to that list during a meeting Thursday, and five others had their confirmation hearings Wednesday, meaning they, too, could see committee action this month.

The last paragraph says a lot...
“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, is trying to work out an agreement on a package of nominees to be approved in the next week or so. The Senate would then adjourn until after the Nov. 6 elections”

Mitch is doing the same thing he did for the August recess—work a deal for easy confirmation on a batch of judges and other appointments in exchange for time off before the midterms. In August, they did voice votes on about 15 judges and approved a slew of us marshals and other positions without holding votes.
Mitch will officially keep the senate in session though to prevent Trump from removing Sessions.

“Yeah, that sounds right. However, except for nuclear optioning Supreme Court picks, McConnell hasn’t shown any interest in changing any other rules.”

As you agreed - the Senate can change the rules, but McConnell is only one Senator. So the balance of power is really held by the same troublemakers and drama queens we all love, which include Murkowski, Flake, Collins, and maybe some others. Unless they’re all on board, none of the Senate rules can change, and McConnell has alluded to ‘other Republicans’ ‘resisting’ when he has wanted to change the rules.

District judges are also the pool from which future appellate judges and SCOTUS picks tend to be drawn, so the more good people the better. Remember, Trump’s judicial legacy will last for decades beyond the end of his presidency. Restoring the integrity of the judiciary is perhaps the most important safeguard for keeping these gains for future generations.

Better yet, I say there's better than a 40% chance that RBG keels over before the next congressional term.

The last video I saw of her looked like warmed over death.

“District Court judges aren’t that important.”

I’l have to disagree on that one. solid, sound legal judgment at the district level will show that adults are in charge and there will be less nonsense to be sent downstream to the appellate courts.

“District Court judges aren’t that important.”

They are the ones issuing one preliminary injunction after another any time Trump tries to reverse an Obama executive order and any time Trump does anything on immigration.

There are a lot of obamajudges out there at the district court level who believe anything to the right of Che Guevara is unconstitutional.

District Court judges are assigned randomly to new cases. So 40 new judges makes it a lot harder for sjw attorneys to get a case assigned to an obamajudge.

There will be no getting rid of scumbag judges. An impeachment and conviction will never happen.

I saw one post-Kavanaugh interview and she started out with her chin on her chest. It took a few too many awkward seconds for her to begin answering the questions of the interviewer.

I don’t think anyone believes that RBG is going to last much longer. Will the Left put her on life support if they have to? Yes.

But, I don’t think she has much longer to go. I think the stress of knowing that nothing she says or writes, matters much anymore. Although, they could do something like the movie, Dave, where they keep her on ice in the basement and find a lookalike. Her staff and clerks probably write all her briefs for her anyway, so that wouldn’t be all that different. All she’s there for now is to vote NO on anything that is beneficial to the country and the administration

A simple majority can nuke the 30 hour rule at any time, just like they nuked the cloture rule and the blue slip rule.

The only reason it’s still there is because of RINOs.
