Romney dodges questions on past Trump attacks during Utah Senate debate

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a heavy favorite in the race to replace retiring Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, ducked questions about his previous attacks on President Trump during a debate on Tuesday night.

Romney called Trump a "phony, a fraud" during the 2016 presidential campaign, and said he was playing the American people for "suckers."

He also said that candidate Trump's "promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University" -- prompting Trump to hit back and call Romney, who lost his bid to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012, a disloyal "choke artist."

But on Tuesday, when asked whether those comments were reflective of his current views, Romney appeared to hedge.

"I don't want to talk about everything that the president says."

— Utah GOP Senate candidate Mitt Romney "I don't think it makes sense to be talking about impeachment, not for a sitting president," he said, responding to a previous comment in the debate. "There are, however, times when I think the president has said things that I think are divisive or racist and misogynistic. I will speak out about those things. ... I don't want to become a gadfly, talking day after day about everything that the president says day to day. I don't always agree with what he says or with his tweets."

Romney said that while he disagreed with Trump's decision to pull out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and had some concerns about his sweeping imposition of tariffs (which Romney said could ultimately "work out well" if they convince China and other countries to treat the U.S. more fairly), he supported Trump's tax cuts and "wise" deregulation agenda.

No, Romney is better than any filthy Rat.

Rats absolutely stick together on everything opposing us, Manchin’s defection on the Kavanaugh vote was an exception.

We need GOP bodies to maintain our majority in the senate, and we MUST maintain a majority to have a chance of undoing the damage caused by the filthy Rats.

Once a tool, always a tool. How many states is this loser a resident of, anyway?

Wrong, Scum Willard is far worse than any Democrat. He’s a Deep Stater within the GOP there to maximize damage to our side. He helped sabotage Palin in 2008, he was a ringer for Zero in 2012, he personally recruited Egg McMuffin in 2016 to try to help elect the Butcheress of Benghazi. He’s extraordinarily dangerous, treacherous and treasonous.

I think Willard is a despicable phony POS also. But I don’t agree that a Democrat is better, especially if it means we lose control of the senate.

It will be interesting to see if Willard starts mouthing off against Trump like Corker, Flake and McCain. Willard has seen those fools enrage their constituents because of their anti-Trump nastiness, and in the case of Corker and Flake, destroy their senate careers.

If the GOP has to rely on treasonous Deep State Socialist scum like Willard to get a majority, it has already lost. Shame on Utah Republicans for voting for a world-class Benedict Arnold.

The real Republican in the race is Tim Aalders. He supports President Trump, unlike Willard.
