Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a heavy favorite in the race to replace retiring Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, ducked questions about his previous attacks on President Trump during a debate on Tuesday night.
Romney called Trump a "phony, a fraud" during the 2016 presidential campaign, and said he was playing the American people for "suckers."
He also said that candidate Trump's "promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University" -- prompting Trump to hit back and call Romney, who lost his bid to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012, a disloyal "choke artist."
But on Tuesday, when asked whether those comments were reflective of his current views, Romney appeared to hedge.
"I don't want to talk about everything that the president says."
Utah GOP Senate candidate Mitt Romney "I don't think it makes sense to be talking about impeachment, not for a sitting president," he said, responding to a previous comment in the debate. "There are, however, times when I think the president has said things that I think are divisive or racist and misogynistic. I will speak out about those things. ... I don't want to become a gadfly, talking day after day about everything that the president says day to day. I don't always agree with what he says or with his tweets."
Romney said that while he disagreed with Trump's decision to pull out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and had some concerns about his sweeping imposition of tariffs (which Romney said could ultimately "work out well" if they convince China and other countries to treat the U.S. more fairly), he supported Trump's tax cuts and "wise" deregulation agenda.

McCain 2.0.
“McCain 2.0.”
Utah, you sure could have done so much better than this...
I couldnt help but notice that there were three GOP Senators on the Judiciary Committee that were Mormon. Should there be that many members on this committee from a seriously over represented demographic that is known for its honesty?
Dirt
Isn’t there ANY way the people of Utah can tell this sh!tstain to crawl back under his rock and go away?
Sigh.
Ummmmmmmm - I was so wrong about him that I won’t talk about it....won’t stop me resuming my agenda whenI’m in the Senate...i would have joined Murkowski and taken that rapist down.....
Still going to need 55 Repukes to govern. Mitt will be like Flake and will make coalitions with Murkowski and Collins often. Don’t count on this vote from Utah...
Once McRomneyCare gets in office expect the puke to become best buddies with his East Coast liberal Friends.
It’ll be like old times for Willard McShifty.
Harry Reid did a number on “Mormon honesty.”
I would rather have an honest Democrat than a POS like Romney.
But...but...but, he's got an "R" after his name...they MUST vote for him!!!!!
UniParty forever!
Utah is a bit weird when it comes to Trump due to the high value placed on pretending in public to be morally upright. Romney plays that part perfectly. However, Utah is a very conservative state, so that will mostly keep Romney in line. He also doesn’t suffer from the McCain syndrome of massive ego paired with limited intelligence and anger control issues.
There were four Mormons: Hatch, Lee, Flake and Crapo.
I’m thinking that Romney will be a one-term senator. He won’t be able to help himself when the opportunity to be a globalist, liberal, whiny RINO bitch presents itself - which will be often. Without the 17th Amendment, the Utah legislature would just recall his ass and replace him...
Romney is actually a smart guy and is coming around to Trump. Romney's biggest weakness is his need to always be liked by both sides. He will serve as long as he wants to in Utah.
.....and if Willard decides to be a snarky gadfly like Saint Jeffy Flake, he will be a one term senator. Hed best tread carefully and give President Trump the respect he deserves.
We shall see...
Mormon judiciary committee members: Flake, Hatch, who else?
Hopefully, the Republicans will have 56+ senators...if so, Willard will be irrelevant.
