Missouri judge rules officials can't tell voters photo ID required to cast ballot

A Missouri judge on Tuesday ruled that state election officials can no longer spread materials that indicate voters must provide a photo ID in order to cast a ballot, Reuters reported.

The news outlet reported that Judge Richard Callahan, who sits on the Cole County Circuit Court, ruled that the materials must also specify other forms of identifications that voters can show. He additionally wrote that state authorities can't require people who are otherwise qualified to vote to sign a sworn statement.

The ruling effectively blocked a portion of Missouri's voter identification law one month before November's midterm elections.

Priorities USA, a Democratic super PAC that filed the lawsuit in June, hailed the ruling as a win for voting rights, Reuters reported.

Missouri Secretary of State John Ashcroft, who administers state elections, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in a statement that his office was "pleased the court found that the voter ID law is constitutional, and the judge did not find anyone was prevented from voting."

"We plan to seek a stay and appeal the decision to a higher court, which we believe will overturn the judge’s errors," he added.

The Missouri ruling came the same day that the Supreme Court declined to toss out an appeals court order that allows North Dakota to enforce its voter ID requirement during the 2018 elections.

A group of Native American residents sought to dismiss the order, which requires voters to present identification that includes a current residential street address.

The group argued that the rule disenfranchises a disproportionate share of the Native American population, because many of them live on reservations without standard addresses.

Valid laws are only the ones which don't interfere with a judge's personal agenda.

Leftists learned that the best way to thwart the will of the people, is to control the courts.

An originalist SCotUS which prevents such ludicrousness is their public enemy #1. Hence, the calls to delegitimize/ignore it of late.

Is it just me or is this totally contradictory? Officials can no longer spread the materials, but the materials that they can no longer spread must specify other forms of identifications?

We live near an Indian Reservation and all the houses sit on streets with names.

Since reservations are viewed as “sovereign nations” under US treaty law, there shouldn’t be any problem with listing a recognized Reservation as where an Indian legally lives.

Also, there might be a General Post Office/Box Number that is recognized as a “legal address” for receiving mail, so, as the judge said in the movie “Miracle on 34th Street” (?), “If the Post Office recognizes this man as Santa Claus with an address at the North Pole, who am I to dispute it” (or something like that). The same would apply to a registered reservation member of a recognized tribe.

Some judges just like to fuck around with Republicans and elections. he’ll be overturned and made a fool of by a higher and saner court.

Seems like an activist judge who knew he had to uphold the law still trying to do an end-run around it. Start the petitions to remove the judge immediately.

Must be an Obama appointed judge. ACLU approved.

Not quite, but he was a US Attorney under Obummer..

Callahan left the bench in 2010, when the U.S. Senate confirmed his appointment as the St. Louis-based U.S. attorney for Eastern Missouri, under then-President Barack Obama. He resigned that post last year, with the usual change of attorneys that comes with a new president.

How is showing voter ID against *voting rights*?

The only ones with a RIGHT to vote are citizens and proof of citizenship is not denying anyone their basic right to vote.

What liars dems are.

Regulation of Elections is in the domain of the legislature. The courts have no business interfering with elections within 90 days of a scheduled elections. These actions are almost always political motivated and intended to favor a particular party.

Cole County includes the State Capitol at Jefferson City. Government is the business of the county.
