My father was a big advocate for sleeping with a loaded gun.
For a time as a young man he lived with his sister.
Her husband was an abusive drunk, and gotten physical with her more than once.
He showed the gun to his brother-in-law and said “This will be with me at all times, and if you ever come after my sister again, you sonofa b****, I’ll kill you.”
He did not hit her again, so long as my dad lived with them.
After that she got smart and divorced him.
My dad was this mild-mannered retired engineer who everyone said reminded them of Fred Rogers. But I absolutely believe that if this bloke would have come after his sister again, he would have shot him.
Massive lawsuits against the folks funding them would be better.

Churchill had a funny story about his first trip to the Kremlin to meet with Stalin. As part of the honor and hospitality that Stalin provided to Churchill, Winston discovered, as he was getting in bed in his room at the Kremlin, that Stalin had ordered that a loaded revolver be placed beneath Churchill’s pillow. Stalin considered that an honor and a message of his goodwill, he gave Churchill a means of self-defense in case nefarious actors might wish to disrupt the potential World War 2 alliance post Barbarossa.
There’s a long tradition of this is times of strife.
I sleep next to a loaded gun. I sit awake with a loaded gun. I stand and walk awake with a loaded gun. I don’t carry it in the shower but it ain’t far away. I’m so use to it, its become part of getting dressed in the morning. I wish more people carried. Less mischief that way.
