Trump Wants Chinese Parts Out of American Weapons

The Pentagon intends to invest in domestic manufacturing to reduce its over-reliance on Chinese and other foreign-made parts in American weapons, top defense officials said Thursday.
The U.S. reliance on China is one of many areas discussed in a 146-page report about the health of the defense industrial base that President Trump is scheduled to release on Friday during an event at the White House. Other areas include accelerating workforce development efforts to grow domestic science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and critical trade skills.

The report says China is the only producer of various chemicals needed in missiles and bombs, Japan and European nations are the only suppliers of certain carbon fibers used in missiles, satellites, and space rockets; Germany is the prime supplier of special vacuum tubes for night vision goggles, it says.

Trump's fault

Long time coming. I guess past presidents don’t see the suicide in buying and relying on weapons from foreign powers.

I’ve always felt that even if it doesn’t result in the most efficient use of capital investment, there’s a strategic imperative to sustaining a manufacturing and scientific capability within the United States.
It sounds like this report indicates too many components we rely on are sourced from outside our borders and some by clearly hostile nations (e.g. China).
It will be good to have that discussion and it directly speaks to our readiness to confront challenges in the future.

Yep
Everyone involved in such decisions should be given cavity search equivalent interview to see if their employment with our armed services should be continued.

They also need a federal encouraging the domestic mining of rare earths. Any such law would have to forbid NIMBY lawsuits as well.

Who going to supply tungsten besides the Russians? Whose going to supply rare earths besides the Chinese?
B. Clinton’s fault.

Its not just weapons.
All of US infrastructure probably has masses of “back door” compromised hardware.

Not just foreign powers but Chinese in particular. We already know that the Chinese electronic parts all feed information back to China and yet we have them in our aircraft, civilian and military and in just about everything else.

This should make sense even to those who generally view unfettered trade among nations as a good thing. If we are to remain an independent nation that generally accepts economic freedom, our military must be free of foreign dependence. Especially on socialist regimes.
To: arthurus
yes, but can;’t let any power we don’t control make our weapons systems

good idea, particularly since it finally leaked out recently that hundreds of thousands of chinese-made motherboards had been surreptitiously modified with an itty bitty chip that opened a backdoor into the BIOS microcode allowing said microcode to be remotely and secretly modified at will ...

Partner, you said a mouthful with that statement.
We should not have all of these protesters since we just had big Tax Cuts, peace in the world, and 2 great USSC Justices compared to Kagan, Sotomayor and Bader. They are completely to the Far Left in their decisions.
In fact, we should win easily come this November since the basic unit of society if the family unit and the family has gained so much with the decisions of President Trump but we stand with President Trump all the way.
The Rinos and Rats have been trying to destroy what is left of the family unit.

Partner, hopefully we will have an investigation as to why the Chicoms got all this work here in the U.S.
We know the America Hating Piece of Work Imposter Obama had a lot to do with this sale of computer technogy with the ChiComs.
We will continue to hear more about this tyranny that has happened before our own eyes. The Clintoon Crime Syndicate comes to mind also on this matter.
