A 74-year-old disbarred lawyer accused of killing a South Carolina law enforcement officer and wounding six others in an ambush-style shooting and his son were denied bond Friday.
Fred Hopkins is charged in the death of Florence Police Sgt. Terrence Carraway and six counts of attempted murder in the Wednesday shooting of Florence, S.C., police officers and Florence County sheriffs deputies, FOX Carolina reported.
Hopkins and his adopted son, Seth, 28, have been released from medical facilities.
A judge decided to wait for more information before granting the elder Hopkins, a disabled Vietnam veteran, a court-appointed attorney. Prosecutors argued he doesnt meet the financial qualifications for one.
The elder Hopkins appeared dazed and tired at his bond hearing, WBTW-TV of Myrtle Beach, S.C., reported.
"You understand where you're at right now?," Judge Tommy Mourounas asked Hopkins, according to the station.
"No, where am I?" Hopkins responded.
"You're at bond hearing court," the judge replied.
The younger Hopkins is charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor. Authorities suspect he is a danger to others, especially young women, and believe there may be other victims.
At his bond hearing, Seth Hopkins said only that he would like a court-appointed attorney, which was denied, the State newspaper of Columbia, S.C., reported.
Both men were taken to jail after their hearings.
Meanwhile, authorities said Friday that Wednesday's shootings would be investigated by the same special FBI team that worked on the slayings of five police officers in Dallas in 2016 and last October's mass shooting in Las Vegas.

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - Authorities have named the suspect they believe shot seven police officers in South Carolina as they tried to serve a search warrant.
WIS-TV reports that Florence County Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby identified the suspect Thursday as 74-year-old Fred Hopkins.
Kirby says Hopkins is hospitalized with a head injury and unable to speak with officers. WPDE-TV reports Hopkins fell at the scene.
Kirby says officers were trying to serve a warrant involving an accusation that a 27-year-old person at the home sexually assaulted a foster child in the home.
One officer was killed and six others injured Wednesday in an upscale Florence neighborhood.
Then, four Florence police officers were shot while trying to respond to the initial gunfire, said Allen Heidler, the Florence police chief.
The slain officer, Terrence Carraway, 52, of Darlington, had just been honored for his 30 years of service with the Florence police department.
I want you to pray for the family who lost the bravest police officer I have ever known, Heidler said, visibly overcome by emotion at the news conference.
Nunn said the suspect held off police for two hours holding children hostage in his home before eventually being taken into custody. He would not release the suspects name or condition and other details were not immediately disclosed. ...

disbarred lawyer
The 74-year-old is clearly an old drunk/druggy among other rotten things. What a nasty character. Disbarred for what?
Still have not heard what type of rifle was used.
Looks like an IQ of at least 150 - if you add them together.
One wonders if it might have been a false accusation...

The traditional - client funds.
In rambling posts on Facebook, Fred Hopkins indicated that he was a Vietnam veteran who was a cancer survivor, an ailment he attributed to Agent Orange exposure. A 2000 court document in an old child support case indicated that he was wounded in Vietnam. Father was injured in the Vietnam war; his sole source of income is his disability check of $1127.00 per month, the documents say, referring to Fred Hopkins.
Fred Hopkins was a disbarred lawyer with a previous disorderly conduct case, according to WPDE. He also had previous cases for animals running at large.
Records from the South Carolina Bar Association indicated that Frederick Hopkins was disbarred in 1984. His name was given as Frederick T. Hopkins, Jr.

Grounds for dismissal by a judge that cares about the Constitution?
Doesn't really matter at this point. Cop shows up with a warrant - you either sort it out in court and in the press, or you gun down the cop. If one picks the second option, the issues underlying the warrant are irrelevant.
Did you see the house they were living in? Someone has assets. And his mother is an attorney in good standing - she can step up to the plate.
Details apparently here:
Just a thought. While you are certainly correct, if it was a FA then the cop would still be alive today if it werent made.
What a creep. Hope he gets the chair
Are there any states that still have “the chair”?
