The Senate is expected to stay in session all night Friday as senators brace for a final vote Saturday afternoon on Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination.
The Senate voted 51-49 earlier Friday to advance Kavanaugh's nomination. Under the chamber's rules, senators have an additional 30 hours to debate his nomination before a final vote takes place.
Senators are expected to burn up the 30 hours of debate by staying up all night to give speeches on Kavanaugh's nomination from the Senate floor.
A spokesman for Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said they believed Democrats wanted to speak from the Senate floor throughout Friday night and into Saturday. A Senate Democratic aide confirmed the Senate would be in session all night.
Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), a potential 2020 presidential candidate, was among those slated to begin speaking on Friday night, according to an advisory circulated by his office.
The rare all-night session comes as Kavanaugh appears to be a lock for confirmation.
GOP Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) announced from the Senate floor on Friday that she would support Kavanaugh's nomination, clinching the 50th vote he needed to be confirmed.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) quickly announced after Collins that he would support Kavanaugh, making him the only Democrat expected to vote for him.
Republicans have a narrow 51-seat majority, meaning they can afford to lose one GOP senator before they needed help from Democrats.
GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) voted against advancing Kavanaugh's nomination earlier Friday. She didn't specifically say at the time that she would also oppose him on final confirmation but is viewed by leadership as a likely no vote.
Dear Cory: We will never have another black president. Oboo-boo ruined it for all the rest of you!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We’ve never had one yet. We had a white guy who pretended to be black if that is what you meant.
It’s hard to be normal with that many rocks rolling around in her skull.
I don’t trust her. Daines had better hightail it back after the wedding and McConnell needs to keep the vote open until he arrives.
Voting “present?”...That’s chickensh*t
I have respect for Murkowski. I can understand why she cant do a yes vote and iif she thought her vote was needed, she would vote yes.
I have none for Booker.
I just hope Susan Collins will share The Keg that judge Kavanaugh sent her as a thank you for her yes vote./s
Wouldnt it be remarkable if one or two Republicans used their time to lay out in detail the entire Deep State plot and operation to scuttle Kavanaughs nomination and to completely destroy his reputation?
That is really the bigger story here. Deep State operatives are continuing to try and sabotage this Presidency.
That picture makes my (ahem) want to retract into my (ahem), and I wasn’t even there.
I have respect for Murkowski. I can understand why she cant do a yes vote and iif she thought her vote was needed, she would vote yes
She can easily do a yes vote. She is a liberal and needs to go.
Her vote isnt needed for passage of the nomination.
Unlike the Democrats who vote no out of blind partisanship.
My mistake. She wanted to vote no but will vote present.
Shes a RINO. Big difference. She admires Kavanaugh.
And how does Daines vote and still attend the wedding?
Can you imagine the kind of grassroots campaign $ Sarah would get? McCain would roll over in his grave.
Oh yeah...
She will not vote for Judge K because her fellow liberals would be mad at her.
“Lets all give thanks that Juan McCain was gracious enough to take a dirt nap. If not for that, this nomination would have been tanked.”
It had nothing to do with McCain being gracious. He literally crawled from his death bed to come fulfill his commitment to BREAKING his campaign promise to stop Obamacare.
No, it was because God, er... or someone... called him home.
The wedding comes several hours before the vote. I think there will be a jet plane waiting to take him back to DC.
He cant. Its like a paired vote and thats why Murkowski is abstaining because Daines would have voted yes.
Wont change the final tally. Kavanaugh will be confirmed.
Hope so. I’ll believe it when it is a done deal.
