Former ACLU leaders blast 'appalling' anti-Brett Kavanaugh ad campaign
Washington Examiner ^ | Oct. 4, 2018

Former American Civil Liberties Union leaders say the group is making a serious mistake in opposing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh with a $1 million ad buy focused on sexual misconduct allegations.

"They are not civil libertarians. They are serving a different master now," said former ACLU vice president Michael Meyers, who served on the group's national board from 1981 to 2005.

Meyers said the TV ad campaign, which compares Kavanaugh to famous sex abusers, violates the civil libertarian principle of presumption of innocence and shows the ACLU is increasingly guided by partisanship over principle.

"It's not ironic, it's tragic," Meyers told the Washington Examiner. "It's hypocrisy. It's bald-face hypocrisy. It's outrageous hypocrisy. It's a violation of everything we believe in as civil libertarians. It's appalling, shocking. It's unacceptable."

The American Certain Liberties Union has been a biased disgrace for years, decades

The people I know in it are your typical angry, far left, insecure, ugly types

I saw the ad and it’s reprehensible. Way over the line. He should be able to sue for defamation, or someone on his behalf. The ACLU has truly become the enemy of honesty and decency.

I’m pleased to see this. Good to see Ira Glasser on the right side of this.

I used to be a CC ACLU guy many years ago.

Is it so hard to admit that this organization, and others like the SPLC have completely lost their minds and turned into dangerous partisan outfits?

“They are serving a different master”

the aclu has been serving that fallen angel since their very inception.

ACLU is toilet water now. Real people stopped listening years ago. This puts the gravestone in place.

Did the Libs object when Justice Ginsburg gave her tirade against Trump as a candidate?

Partisan bias on wide display!

“I can’t imagine what this place would be — I can’t imagine what the country would be — with Donald Trump as our president,” she said. “For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be — I don’t even want to contemplate that.”

I think BK will remember this when the ACLU brings their next case before the Supreme Court.

The ACLU is a law firm with a catchy name, right? How do they get by with putting out political ads?

This guy was on their board from 1981-2005? Then this is on him as well. Their transition did not begin in 2006.

Michael Meyers used to write a regular column in one of the NYC newspapers years ago.

My recollection of him was:

"This guy is a flaming liberal but I like reading his columns because he is clearly objective and puts a lot of thought into the positions he takes."

Good to see him taking this stance right now.

I did a quick search on him, and it looks like the ACLU dropped him from their board of directors in 2005 because he was such a pain in the ass and didn’t toe the party line.

I know a lot of people here hate these guys, but even a libertarian like me can see the difference now to what it was. Free Speech is free speech. If they’re at the point of massaging or compromising that now, then there’s no coming back from that.

Only one remedy for this atrocity: Sue for millions. That is what the ACLU did to put the KKK out of business.

The SPLC has always.....at least as far back as I can remember hearing of it in the late 80s....been a Leftist hate group.

Yep... the ACLU is just being exposed for what they’ve always been. The onset of TDS has torn the mask off the totalitarian Left. The light has been shined on them, and it’s a putrid sewer.

The ACLU started out as a communist front organization which by their own admission would argue for civil liberties to protect communists and socialists who were really in the minority in the early part of the 20th century. They planned to capture the institutions and the impose their ideology and extinguish civil liberties once they were in power. Once again, by admission this was their plan.

A strange thing happened along the way. It was taken over in the mid to late 20th century by people who actually cared about civil liberties. Sure, most were liberals like Alan Dershowitz, but they actually did care about civil liberties - even when it did not obviously benefit the Left.

Well in recent years, the ACLU has returned to its roots. Now they’re against gun rights, against free speech and against the presumption of innocence. They’re for the hard Left whatever civil rights the Left sees fit to trample upon for short term political gain.

Yep. Those are the guys I actually admire.
