Amazons decision to raise workers minimum wage to $15 per hour was welcome news,
But for some Amazon employees, the excitement didnt last very long as they learned that existing financial incentives and bonus programs, including stock and monthly bonuses, that usually boost paychecks will be eliminated starting November 1.
Several Amazon warehouse workers in the U.S., who spoke to Yahoo Finance on the condition of anonymity fearing reprisals, talked about how the change will negatively affect them. After the removal of these perks, some workers said they will be making less. Most of the workers who voiced concerns have been working for the company for more than two years, and have been earning close to $15 an hour before the raise.
While these workers hourly rates will rise modestly, they said they could lose thousands of dollars that they would have collected from the stock and monthly-bonus programs. Amazon said those who are already making $15 an hour will see an increase in pay but did not specify how much.
An employee earning $15.25 an hour who has worked for Amazon for more than three years in Arizona crunched the numbers. Although he is getting a $1 an hour raise, which would equate to as much as $2,080 in additional pay a year, he said he could have earned a few thousands of dollars more from the incentive programs. Amazon isnt giving its employees a raise, theyre taking money from us, he told Yahoo Finance. It only looks good if folks dont know the truth.
An Amazon spokesperson said all hourly operations and customer service employees will see an increase in their total compensation as a result of this announcement. In addition, because its no longer incentive-based, the compensation will be more immediate and predictable.

I'm assuming that the bonuses and stocks were earned by productive workers. Unfair to slackers!
Amazing! Amazon actually has to fund the pay raise? Why don't they just create money out of thin air like the federal government does?!
I especially liked the provision that Amazon's worker compensation will no longer be incentive based. Now all of its employees can compete for being the laziest worker without being fired.
WHAT??? They expecy me to pay for everyone else??? Bernie never told ME this shit!!!!
Be careful what you wish for.
The employees are just more roadkill on the left’s highway to socialism.
They = Bezos = Democrat = Trump Hater...
Time to blame Trump’s Tax Reform Bill.
Sometimes the extra benefits and perks are what makes a lower wage job worthwhile.
It's like a bar/restaurant owner raising the hourly wages of the waiters/bartenders but keeping all the tips.
I once owned a bar/restaurant and we offered our employees union hourly rates or a lower hourly rate but a bonus based on a percentage of quarterly sales {they kept tips under either schedule}.
When we first started, most chose union rates, but a few took the option of bonus.
After the first quarter, those that took the bonus almost doubled the hourly rate of the union rate, and soon they all changed.
It cost us a few more bucks, but, we had every bartender hustling their collective asses off to increase sales {this was in the 70s when there was no MADD and if our patrons got stoned, the cops went blind}, it would not work today.
I used to tend bar a couple of shifts a week and work a few outings a month at a local golf & country club. The wages were not something to write home about, but good service generated a nice tip income.
At the start of (I think) my fifth season there, we were called in to a meeting and told that everyone was getting a very large raise. We were also told no more tipping; a 17% service charge would be added to checks and house charges. I went back over the previous year’s tip book and calculated that I’d been making more than $21 an hour in combined income. They were “raising” me from $5.75 plus tips to $14, no tips. The management put little mounted notices on the tables and the bar saying “NO TIPS” and announcing the service charge. The members assumed that the percentage was going to the servers; a few added on a bit.
I added a note to the notices that told the truth; we did not get the percentage, but did get a higher wage. Many of our best bar customers started paying in cash and tipping as generously as before. Management did not like that and I was terminated.
Just one more dollar, just one more week.
I hate em all.
Snowflakes, you all are leaking
I forgot to mention- that golf club is now in the process of becoming a field of McMansions!
That used to be the case with most government jobs. Now they make more than the general public but still have all the bennies!
. Precisely. Do they think the employer has infinite funds? Companies exist to create a profit. That is the law. Demands of more of one thing, inherently mean you get less of something else. Faster, cheaper, better ~ pick any two
So the people who actually produced more to gain the incentives available will now not produce as they did before no reason to!!! STUPID business move!!!!
Liberal ‘elite’ thug.
Welcome to socialism, where we pay the less productive more, by paying the more productive less.
Almost like money doesn’t grow on trees, and a company has to pay attention to the total expenses.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! Serves them right. They don’t like the benefits, then they are welcome to find another job.
The workers in Seattle had a rude awakening. Stories like:
“They raised my minimum wage to $15 in the little cafe where I worked. But then they wouldn’t pay for my parking, so now I either have to pay for that or take the bus which takes money and time. We also could take a sandwich for free and a drink for lunch break - but that was taken away too. They had to raise the prices, so now not as many people come in, and the tips are a lot lower.”
LOL! I worked for a company that did this in reverse. They implemented a bone-us program instead of base raises. The first year we would make a good amount more. Everyone was excited... except those of us that knew how to do basic math. Two years in, it was big pay cut. Huge.
