Trump: ‘In a very short period of time, bump stocks will be ruled out’

When questioned on the one-year anniversary of the Las Vegas Route 91 Harvest Festival Shooting, President Trump said his administration was looking to soon “eliminate” bump stocks.

Trump was speaking to reporters in the White House’s Rose Garden on Monday about the new trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada, when he took a moment to pause and acknowledge the anniversary of the event that left 58 dead and some 850 wounded, saying the shooting as “a horrible, horrible time in the life of our country.”

Just over an hour into the conference, when asked about the subject of bump stocks and the anniversary of the Las Vegas shootings, Trump said he was nearing action on the devices which catapulted to national attention for their role in the event.

“In order to eliminate — terminate — bump stocks, we have to go through a procedure,” said Trump. “We are now at the final stages of that procedure — in fact, the lawyers were just telling me — and over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be able to write it out. But you can’t just write it out because rules and regulations in this nation are really tough, even for something like that.

“So we’re knocking out bump stocks,” said Trump. “I’ve told the NRA, I’ve told everyone. Bump stocks are gone. But to do it you have to go to public hearings — which we’ve had.

Saying his administration was working on both sides in Congress on the issue, Trump summed up that, “In a very short period of time, bump stocks will be ruled out.”

Since last December, regulators have been researching federal law to determine if certain bump stock devices fall within the definition of “machine gun,” which led to Trump in February ordering the Department of Justice to craft regulations to “write out” the devices himself. Since then, the primary maker of bump stocks in the country stopped taking orders for the controversial devices, although they are still readily available.

Although at least eight states have outlawed bump stocks in the past year, Americans could possess as many as 520,000 of the devices, according to estimates from federal regulators. Meanwhile, statewide bans on bump stocks have sparked lawsuits in Florida, Maryland, and Vermont.

Mississippi-based Second Amendment attorney Stephen Stamboulieh said, should the federal government move to ban the devices, “I’m going to sue them day one.”

I heard the problem is that the law covers all sorts of things that aren't bump stocks, like just a new improved grip.

My take: My observation is that the President can still be naive on some matters. Firearms rights being one of them.

I wonder if he has spoken to his sons, who are much more "gun folk" than their dad.

One thing about Trump is how he can and will change his mind when presented with a compelling argument. That's our best approach here.

My two cents...

TREASON!!!

If We the People had wanted a gun-control freak, we would have voted for the Hildebeeste.

I respectfully disagree. Trump is many things, but naïve is not one of them. He knows what he’s doing. He’s a winner and wants to win this November and in 2020 (hint: it won’t be at the expense of the Second Amendment).

The problem is that the proposed law regulates anything that "increases the rate of fire" of a weapon.

Does a lighter trigger weight 'increase the rate of fire?' Does a muzzle brake that prevents muzzle rise increase the rate of fire? Does a large capacity magazine increase the long term rate of fire?

They're advertising that they're going after bump stocks, binary triggers, and trigger cranks, but their law goes after much, much more.

Can’t see where bump stocks are good for anything but spraying a lot of inaccurate rounds down range...hate to see them outlawed but won’t stop supporting Trump unless he starts thinking about firearms in general....way too much at stake to worry about what amounts to a “hold muh beer and watch this” novelty.

and violating the Second Amendment when they do so. Trump is DEAD WRONG on this.

Gosh, I wish someone would write a federal law or something that would prohibit the government from infringing on our right to keep and bear arms.

Probably asking too much, I expect.

It would never pass.

Who cares? If Trump gets them banned:

1) Leftists will still hate him.

2) He will have shown pusillanimous conduct in the face of the enemy.

3) He will have enacted more "gun control" than the Kenyan Usurper.

4) He will have betrayed his oath of office.

5) He will have betrayed We the People who put him in office.

Under the letter of the law, government can’t do that. That means even President Trump can’t do that. I see no purpose for bump stocks, but banning them takes legislation. I do see a Second Amendment guarantee against such legislation (not that even a republican Congress seems to care).

The insanity continues. What part of shall not be infringed has the footnote “except for ...?”

Love my country, support my President... Think this is remarkably stupid.

Whoever did the Vegas shooting* would have achieved a higher hit rate without bump stocks. This set-up opens the door to tyranny.

*Definitely not Patsy Paddock.

I know he’s a city boy from New York and I do like him. But he doesn’t know much about rifles. Has anyone pointed out to him that bump stocks probably lowered the toll there?
Just imagine the dumb ass in the hotel had been engaged in very rapid aimed fire instead. God alone probably knows how many he would have killed.

"it won’t be at the expense of the Second Amendment"

If bump-fire stocks are being banned, then it is, by definition.

I just see Mr. Trump's understanding of the RKBA is not as deep as we'd like. One cannot be the master of all things. Just because something is frivolous doesn't validate it's being abolished.

I'm no fan of them myself. But that doesn't mean that other folks aren't free to burn things up if they feel so inclined.

Politically, this is rather low-hanging fruit, and I see it at least partially being thrown to the anti-gun wolves as a sop. Problem is, those wolves will be back for more. And soon.

No. Mr. President you are not allowed to pass laws. You are the head of the executive branch. 👍
