Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty in New York Bike Path Terrorism Case

Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, who previously entered a plea of not guilty, faces an indictment that includes murder, attempted murder and terror-related charges in the October 31 rampage.

In a court filing Friday, prosecutors said Saipov, 30, committed the crimes “in an especially heinous, cruel and depraved manner.” They also cited his alleged support of the Islamic State and lack of remorse.

The suspect’s attorneys said in a statement that they were disappointed.

“We think the decision to seek the death penalty rather than accepting a guilty plea to life in prison with no possibility of release will only prolong the trauma of these events for everyone involved.”

Saipov, who told investigators he was motivated to use the truck by watching ISIS videos, was arrested during the incident. After his truck hit a school bus, stopping it in its tracks, he exited the vehicle, and a New York police officer shot him. Dozens of people were injured.

Lots of money to spend on chasing a sentence that will never be carried out.

Money to spend keeping scum like this out? Not so much.

What a waste of tax payer money. Accept the deal for life with out parole, instead of seeking the death penalty. Hell, the last person NY executed was in 1963, so even if he gets the death penalty, NY will never execute him. The end result will be the same, except the taxpayers will get to foot the bill for the death penalty trial. Unless I’m missing something.

It would have saved money to have immediately bought a rope.

I believe federal crimes may drive the death penalty here in the ultra-liberal northeast and California; the states themselves wouldn’t even be involved.

This incident led to the “diversity barriers” (used to be called “dragons’ teeth” in WWII) springing up to protect normals from the murderous attacks of the followers of the “religion of peace”. Kudos to the FReeper I first saw using that term; now when they have parades they are parking sand-filled garbage trucks at the intersections with cross streets along the route to prevent car bombings/rammings by the foreign enemies we’ve trafficked here.

If sentenced to death, he will die in prison after costing the state zillions in fees to lawyers.

New York is no longer actually America and being European, will never put him to death

Don't know for sure if New York State has the DP but assuming it doesn't it's good that this 8th Century pig fornicator is being tried in Federal Court.

A couple of years ago the Boston Marathon bomber was tried in Federal Court in Boston.Because Massachusetts doesn't have the DP the press was saying that there was no way the jury would give him the DP.

The press was wrong! ROTFL!

“Federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty against the suspect in New York’s deadliest terror incident since 9/11,“

It’s in Federal Court. They can and do impose the DP. The State Of New York has nothing to say about it.

Put it this way. If you are ANTS inmate, you can kill everybody in jail and nothing happens to you. Zilch, zero, nada....you just sit there with no punishment.

If we quit seeking the death penalty, they’ve won. We then de facto have no death penalty in the US.

I support seeking it in every reasonable instance. Were I a victim of this man that is what I’d want done. Dont offer a life in prison promoting evil to others after they have slaughtered someone I live. That is not justice.

The decades long appeals system isn’t justice either but it’s better than giving up.
