Full title: Dunkin' Donuts is dropping the 'Donuts' from its name, despite the fact it helped invent the word 'donut'
Dunkin' Donuts is dropping the "Donuts" from its name.
On Tuesday the chain announced that in January it would officially change its name to simply "Dunkin'." Tests of the shortened name over the past year have inspired backlash, but apparently did little to persuade executives not to make the change official.
The decision is especially notable because Dunkin' Donuts played a crucial role in putting the word "donut" in the dictionary.
Dunkin' Donuts and Mister Donut, two chains founded by brothers-in-law in the mid-1950s, are some of the first known uses of the term "donut" as opposed to the traditional "doughnut."

Every business has a core competency. In most cases, if they pivot too far from that, they die.
DD exists because they sell donuts. Good coffee (and I’m a coffee snob), sure; other food, sure. Move away from donuts as their core purpose, they’ll terminally decline.
IHOP was just pulling a 1-day stunt ... but even that left people confused. You mentioned IHOP, and I had to wonder whether their steak screwup was still happening.

Not a surprise, especially following Starbucks’s announcement to shorten their name to Toilet.
Same with Kentucky Fried Chicken and IHOP
Why? Because some consultant did polling that indicated people thought “donuts” were not healthy?
Domino’s did the same thing, when they removed the “Pizza” from the name.
